What Separates Me and You
Chapter 427 The Trouble He Goes Through

Josephine was too busy munching on a fried chicken drumstick in her dreams to know what Lewis was doing.

Her mother didn't like her eating unhealthy food. Josephine was currently engaged in a tug-of-war with her mother.

She sank her teeth into the drumstick to prevent her mother from snatching it away. She used every ounce of her energy to protect her drumstick. Her jaws clenched tighter with every second that passed.

At the same time, Lewis glowered more as she did so. He used his free hand to force Josephine's jaws open and had to jerk his finger to rescue it from her mouth.

His finger glistened with her saliva, and her bite mark showed clearly. He rose to his feet and left the bedroom.

Nancy was still in a heated argument with Mrs. Larson downstairs. Lewis ignored their presence and went to the study.

Eventually, Nancy left in a sulky mood. Conrad happened to drop by when she was on her way out. She pulled him aside and asked, "Mr. Berg, what's on Lewis' mind recently?"

Conrad was stunned. He hid the documents he held behind him. "He's busy with work at the office, of course."

Nancy eyed him suspiciously.

Conrad didn't want to bring the conversation any further and nodded respectfully. "Mrs. Alvarez, I'll be heading inside." With that, he darted into the mansion and made a beeline for the study.

He handed the documents to Lewis. "Sir, we examined every surveillance footage we could find and Mr. Acre's call history. The footage showed him leaving for the outskirts in a car, after which he was never seen again. The last conversation he had on the phone ..." Conrad hesitated and glanced at Lewis before he continued, "was with you."

Lewis took the documents. He scanned the surveillance images and records of Mr. Acre's call history.

Conrad added, "Mr. Acre's wife claimed he left after a phone call. He didn't seem any different when he left and was acting like his usual self." Lewis listened in silence. A smirk formed on his lips as he studied the surveillance images. "Look at all the trouble he went through." Conrad instantly understood who Lewis was referring to-who else could it be if not Kiran?

Conrad was pissed as he thought about the man who had been relentlessly bothering them. "That bastard's stirring trouble right after being discharged. He clearly has too much free time!"

Lewis commented, "That's not true. He's doing all these because of me." He tossed the photos on the table and continued, "If I guess correctly, the police will find Mr. Acre's corpse within these few days. They'll also find that all the evidence isn't in my favor."

Conrad was flustered. "What should we do?"

"We must find his corpse before they do."

"Alrig-Wait. How are you so sure Mr. Acre's dead, sir?"

Lewis pinched the bridge of his nose. "If he isn't, he'll let the cat out of the bag when they find him, won't he?"

Conrad was enlightened. In that case, wouldn't Mr. Acre have only a slim chance of surviving? "I'll send some men to search for him."

"Search where he can be easily found. Our rival wants the police to discover his corpse. He won't hide it somewhere secluded."

"Roger that." Conrad glanced at the documents and hesitated. Then, he said, "Oh, there's another thing. I think Mr. Fairchild is here to muddy the waters."

Lewis arched an eyebrow. "I almost forgot about him."

"Hm?"

"Get him to join the search. He should know where the corpse is."

Conrad frowned. He was puzzled.

Conrad wanted to ask why but was worried Lewis would think he was foolish. In the end, he decided against it and left to carry out his tasks. He called Seth immediately after he left the mansion.

Seth was still working overtime at the office. Because of the outstanding records, he inspected almost all the company's accounts from the past year. Conrad's call prompted him to abandon his duties without hesitation.

They met at a highway exit. Conrad was surprised to see Seth. "That didn't take you long, Mr. Fairchild."

Seth slammed his car door shut and plastered on his signature smile. He approached Conrad and said, "I'm more than glad to help you with something meaningful instead of going through the accounts."

Conrad sized him up and mocked, "Looks like you're comfortable with your new task."

"To think you would notice that. However, all work and no play make me a dull boy. Working overtime every day is too much for me."

Conrad choked on his words. Then, he said, "You should know what we're searching for, Mr. Fairchild."

"Yes, of course. But here's a kind reminder, Mr. Berg. Finding the corpse can be the end of you. If that happens, you won't be able to wriggle yourself out of this situation easily," Seth reminded.

What if the police arrived just as Conrad found the corpse? They might mistake him for a suspect too.

"Then what should we do?"

"That's a question for the chairman. Don't come to me. I won't be responsible for anything that happens." Seth concluded with a disclaimer to shirk all responsibilities.

Conrad was torn as to what he should do. He returned to the car and called Lewis. But Lewis merely instructed him to continue the search without saying anything else.

Since Lewis said so, Conrad dared not object. He and Seth headed for the outskirts in search of Mr. Acre. However, their effort proved to be futile after a night-long search.

Conrad suspected Seth was intentionally trying to prevent him from finding the corpse. He grew demotivated as he watched the sun rise from the horizon.

Then, he glanced at the man smoking while leaning against the car. He huffed, "Where is it?"

Seth glanced at him in amusement. "Mr. Berg, both of us were tasked to find the corpse. What makes you think I'll know where it is when you don't?" "There's no way you don't know!"

Seth raised an eyebrow. "Watch your words, Mr. Berg. I can always sue you for spreading lies."

Conrad glared at him. After taking a break, he ignored Seth and drove back to the office. He left Seth to continue the search with the other men.

Avery visited Josephine at the mansion again, but Josephine was sleeping. Avery came to the bedroom and called her several times. She eventually managed to wake Josephine up.

Josephine was glad to see her. She rubbed her eyes as she got out of bed. "You're here, Avery. What are we going to play today?"

Avery couldn't help but pinch her cheeks gently at her playful demeanor. "Have your breakfast, and then we'll play."

Josephine nodded without being completely awake. Her eyes were half closed as she went to wash up. She still looked sleepy when she emerged from the bathroom.

"What time did you sleep last night?"

"I don't know." Josephine rubbed her eyes to drive the drowsiness away. It didn't work. Her eyes felt heavy, and she desperately craved sleep. She took her breakfast in the dining hall and forced down a bitter bowl of herbal concoction. The bitterness of the concoction woke her up. Avery suggested playing hide-and-seek, which Josephine gladly agreed to. She asked Josephine to hide, and she would look for Josephine. Josephine snuck upstairs and hid in a small room. Darkness loomed over her when she closed the door. For some reason, the complete darkness stirred panic in her.
