What Separates Me and You
Chapter 428 Many Want Me Dead

Josephine felt for the door handle. She opened the door and bolted as if a tiger were after her. She ran all the way back to the bedroom. Upon opening the door, she hurried to the bed and hid beneath the sheets.

Her heart pounded in her chest, and she couldn't stop shivering. She covered her ears with her hands. Fleeting images flashed across her mind, and she felt intense pain in her head.

Avery opened the door and immediately spotted her. She crept toward Josephine and pulled the blanket off her. "I found you!"

She intended to frighten Josephine, but her smile faded at the scene before her. Josephine curled up with her hands over her ears. Her eyes were shut, and her face was as pale as a ghost.

"Josephine, what's wrong?" Avery tapped her shoulder.

Josephine's eyes flew open, and she immediately lunged at Avery. She hugged Avery as if her life depended on it.

Avery was stunned. Her hands froze midair as she didn't know what to do. A short while later, she patted Josephine on the back. "There, there. Don't be afraid. I'm here with you."

Josephine hugged Avery's neck.

Josephine had numerous distressing thoughts and memories of being in a gloomy place. Tears streamed down her face.

She couldn't remember anything, but the fear and sorrow overwhelmed her. The emotions stung her. It was a strange feeling she wasn't accustomed to.

Avery coaxed her for a long time before she calmed down. When Avery realized it, she was already asleep.

Avery put her on the bed and pulled the blanket over her. She then reached out to wipe her tears.

Although Josephine was asleep, her brows remained furrowed. She was still feeling miserable, even in her sleep.

Avery sat beside her for a while. Then, she sighed and went downstairs.

She waited for Josephine to wake up. However, it didn't happen.

The sunset sent golden rays cascading through the window onto Avery's feet. She studied the canvas before her. She was almost done.

On the drawing, Josephine beamed radiantly. It was a smile she never saw on Josephine after knowing her for so long.

Avery put her brush down when she saw Mrs. Larson descending the stairs. She asked, "Is she still asleep?"

Mrs. Larson sighed and shook her head. Dr. Halliday came down beside her.

Avery stepped forward and asked, "What's wrong with her?"

Dr. Hallilday shook his head. "We can't find the cause."

They fell silent.

Mrs. Larson said, "Ms. Green, when you played with her several days ago, she could stay awake. Today, she slept halfway through the game."

"Where's Lewis?"

Mrs. Larson replied. "He left in the morning and hasn't returned yet. He's been busy these past few days."

Avery smirked, "All he ever thinks about is work. He doesn't care about Josephine's well-being and keeps her confined in the house."

Mrs. Larson quickly came to his defense. "He's just afraid something will happen to Madam."

"Nonsense. I think he's afraid someone will run off with Josephine. He has always been shameless."

Sometimes, Avery felt tickled at the thought of Lewis' actions. It was understandable if he was wary of men around Josephine, but he reacted all the same toward women. She wondered if he had lost it.

Lewis did everything possible to force her out of Elysium back then. He wanted to stop her from contacting Josephine.

Avery was dissing Lewis when she received a call from Tyler urging her to go home. She walked out as she spoke on the phone.

Tyler said, "Avy, please refrain from visiting Josephine for a few days."

Avery had just hopped onto her motorcycle. She was taken aback by his words. "Why?"

Tyler replied, "Lewis has been in trouble recently. Don't get involved."

"That's good news! What trouble is he in? Delight me." Avery was pleased to know that.

Tyler's lips twitched. "Why are you so happy?"

"There's no reason not to be! I hope he gets jail time. If he does, I'll definitely celebrate the occasion."

"I'm afraid I'll disappoint you." A voice came from behind Avery. It wasn't coming from the phone.

Avery's smile froze, and her hair stood on end. She gripped her phone tightly. Then, she turned around in an unnatural manner.

Lewis was standing behind her. It was unclear how long he had been there.

"Are you a ghost? Why didn't I hear your footsteps?"

Lewis smiled and looked at her condescendingly. "Perhaps you were too happy to notice me."

Avery pursed her lips. Indeed, she wasn't aware of her surroundings out of glee. She was exuberant to know Lewis was in trouble.

She stopped pretending and retorted, "I'm sure I won't be the only one. Many others will feel the same. Shouldn't you reflect on your doings? Have you been keeping count of how many people you've wronged?"

Lewis seemed not to take her seriously. "Many want me dead, but they can do nothing. You're one of them."

Avery snorted. "Yeah, right. Keep your arrogance. One day, you'll go down hard."

She put on her helmet and left the mansion unperturbed.

The sunset's golden rays illuminated Lewis' face but not his soulful eyes. He watched her leave until she disappeared from his line of sight.

He returned to the mansion. Mrs. Larson informed him Josephine had been sleeping the entire day. Not even Avery's presence could help that. She suggested, "Should you bring Madam out for a stroll?"

Lewis ignored her suggestion and went upstairs. Josephine was still sleeping. He stood before the bed and watched her. Then, he opened the window and went to the balcony to take a drag.

Moments later, he received a call.

The police found Mr. Acre's corpse in an abandoned cave on the outskirts. Seth was late.

Seth was undeniably smart. He didn't leave others an opening to relate him with the incident.

The police called Lewis because he was the last person Mr. Acre had contacted. This incident wasn't supposed to attract too much attention. Someone was pulling the strings. Many were following the incident as it progressed.

Lewis gained immense popularity after what happened with Sierra. He became an idol to many and was more popular than several top-tiered celebrities.

When the news broke out, the inte moaned in grief.

Many thought nothing would tarnish Lewis' image. However, that was not the case.

Conspiracy theories bloomed like mushrooms after the rain.

The online community speculated that Lewis might have something to do with Robert's death. They believed he had motives related to Robert's inheritance. They suspected him of murdering the lawyer.

There were various hypotheses. Things started to spiral out of hand. Some people claimed to know inside news and spread all sorts of "secrets." It caused a commotion, and the related departments had to investigate.

That was why gaining popularity wasn't necessarily a good thing.

Josephine slept through the day. She woke up only in the middle of the night due to hunger. Her breakfast was her last meal, and she was feeling dizzy.

Mrs. Larson dared not sleep in her room nowadays. She had been sleeping on the sofa in the living room instead.

Mrs. Larson jerked awake when she heard the door open and saw Josephine leaving the bedroom.
