What Separates Me and You -
Chapter 435 Doomed
"You!" Zach's face flushed red with anger as he glared at Lewis.
Lewis ignored him. He carried Josephine and walked past him into the house.
He brought Josephine back to the bedroom upstairs. Then, he gently placed her on the bed and left.
Suddenly, Josephine tugged at the corner of his clothes. He turned around and looked at her.
With tearful eyes, Josephine whispered, "Where are you going?"
Lewis moved her hand away from him and sat beside her.
"I have something to attend to. I'll be back soon."
Josephine felt reluctant and pouted. He always took a long time to return whenever he left.
He had promised to take her home, but he was always away.
Lewis stayed with her for a while. Then, he let go of her hand and stood up to leave.
Josephine clenched the bedsheet tightly while watching him leave.
Lewis and the others entered the conference room on the top floor of Alvarez Corp. There were already quite a few people inside.
Apart from Kiran and Seth, Milo was present too.
Lewis' gaze lingered on Milo's face for a while. Milo felt somewhat guilty and avoided Lewis' eyes.
Lewis took a seat and said calmly, "Go ahead. Any progress this time?"
Zach followed suit and sat down. "Mr. Waverly, please go over it again."
Milo thought for a moment. Then, he opened the folder of documents on the table.
"This is Mr. Robert's latest will. He instructed both me and Mr. Acre to follow this will."
Lewis listened silently.
Milo continued, "The notarized will wasn't revoked for certain reasons. But Robert did express his preference for this will."
Zach continued asking, "So, is the notarized will authentic?"
Milo replied, "We examined the notarized will and learned it had been tampered with. Since Mr. Acre has passed away, we couldn't determine the exact circumstances."
Zach added, "According to the letter of accusation left by Mr. Acre, the notarized will was modified a month before Robert's passing on January 18th." Lewis remained silent throughout.
Zach turned his head and looked at him. He asked, "Mr. Alvarez, do you have anything to say about this?"
Lewis picked up the will from the table and casually flipped through it. "What do you expect me to say?"
"A month before his death. It sounds like you're saying I knew about his passing beforehand and altered the will because of it."
Zach responded, "But you were indeed in contact with Layla. Also, according to her testimony, you are suspected of inciting her in your conversation." Lewis chuckled. "That's a groundless assumption. Considering how Layla burned down Alvarez Manor, her testimony holds no credibility. Moreover, how can you prove this non-notarized will is genuine?"
Milo said, "I saw Mr. Robert drafting the will. How could it be fake?"
"Is that so?" Lewis gave him a meaningful look.
Seeing Lewis' calm demeanor, Kiran frowned. He couldn't help but feel that Lewis was too composed.
He wondered if Lewis was acting or had a backup plan.
Milo insisted, "Of course, it's genuine! All the evidence points to you. You're the prime suspect."
Lewis didn't bother arguing with him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a USB drive. "Conrad, bring the laptop here."
Conrad nodded. He quickly fetched the laptop from the nearby table.
He took the USB drive from Lewis and plugged it into the laptop.
Moments later, a familiar voice echoed in the quiet conference room.
"President Kiran, how can I help you?"
As the voice rang out, Kiran and Milo's faces fell.
Indeed, the owner of that voice was Milo.
It was his conversation with Kiran after leaving Alvarez Manor yesterday.
Kiran gave him a document and said, "I have another will of Robert here. I'd like you to take a look and verify if Robert personally drafted this will." Milo glanced at the document, and his face turned pale. "President Kiran, this is ..."
Kiran interrupted him. "Milo, please take a closer look."
Milo saw the look in Kiran's eyes. He hesitated briefly before looking at the document again. He already knew why Kiran reached out to him. After much hesitation, Milo stammered, "Yes, this is Mr. Robert's will."
"What did he say at that time?"
"He... He said this will is authentic and valid, and we should follow this will."
Kiran laughed. "Too bad Mr. Acre died because of this will. Fortunately, we have you. I believe Mr. Robert would hope you can clear his name of any wrongdoing, don't you think so?"
Kiran's words seemed fine. But Milo could sense the underlying threat.
If he didn't comply, he might end up lying dead in the wilderness like Oberon.
Milo looked at him in horror.
He swallowed nervously and muttered, "I got it. The will you got is authentic, and the notarized will has been tampered with."
"You truly are a smart man, Mr. Waverly."
The recording paused. Two minutes later, Milo's voice sounded from the laptop again.
"Honey, keep this card. We'll leave the country after tomorrow."
"What's going on? Why the rush?" came a woman's voice.
"Someone gave me fifty million to provide false testimony. But don't worry, the evidence is conclusive, and this fifty million is easy money."
"Are you crazy? You'll be doomed if you get caught!"
"What can I do? He threatened me. If I didn't comply, I would be the next Oberon."
The conference room fell deadly silent as everyone listened to the recording.
Kiran stared at Milo with murderous intent.
Milo slumped weakly in his chair. His face was ashen. Sweat dripped down his forehead like large beads.
He knew that he was really doomed now.
Even Kiran started panicking. He stared intently at Lewis. He wondered when Lewis had started planning all this.
Lewis didn't interact with Milo when they were at Alvarez Manor yesterday. When did Lewis even plant the listening device on Milo?
The recording also played Milo's conversation with Nancy. That meant the device had been planted on Milo before he met Nancy. Lewis was just waiting for him to take the bait.
The people present were shocked. All of them directed their gazes at Kiran.
Zach jolted up from his seat. His face was filled with anger. "President Kiran, Mr. Waverly, I guess you have some explanation to do about this recording."
Kiran remained composed and replied, "These are all Mr. Waverly's assumptions. I only asked him to help verify the will. That's all. Moreover, this audio was recorded secretly. It can't be considered evidence, right?"
Lewis calmly said, "Indeed, it may not be accepted as evidence, but at the very least, it proves my innocence, doesn't it?"
Kiran found himself momentarily at a loss for words.
Lewis continued, "However, I am curious, President Kiran. You're not related to my father. Where did you get this will? It's impossible he handed it to you personally.
"If that's the case, that's even weirder. Why didn't my father revoke the notarized will if he trusted you with the will? Did he foresee his own death and anticipate that I would tamper with the will? Or did he use his own life to outwit me?"
Lewis leaned forward and looked at Kiran with an ambiguous smile. "President Kiran, are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
