What Separates Me and You
Chapter 457 Why Are You Doing This

Josephine recalled Lewis' past actions. Whether it was then or now, she had no dignity whatsoever before him. He treated her like a pet, or a toy, even. She never received respect befitting of a human being.

Feeling intensely humiliated, Josephine felt like crying. She closed her eyes, and tears trickled down her cheeks.

Lewis halted, and silence ensued. A warm hand caressed her cheek. "What's wrong?"

Josephine refused to speak with him and buried her face in the pillow. Resentment and gloom swamped her. Her shoulders trembled as she held in her sobs.

Lewis stared at her for several moments and sighed. He promptly sat upright. "Sorry."

With that, he got out of bed, and then she heard the bedroom door closing.

Josephine clutched the pillow. The desire to leave this place had never been stronger. She wanted nothing more than to grow wings and leave this place behind.

Lewis never returned after that. Within two hours, dawn broke. Josephine didn't sleep. She heard birds chirping and sat up in bed, frustrated. She went downstairs. Mrs. Larson was preparing breakfast and was surprised to see Josephine. "Madam, you're awake so early today." Josephine had given up trying to correct how Mrs. Larson should address her. Her gaze swept across the living room. She didn't see Lewis. Mrs. Larson seemed to figure out who she was looking for. She explained, "Mr. Alvarez had left early this morning.

Josephine pursed her lips and said nothing.

Mrs. Larson waited on her. "Breakfast is ready, madam. Why don't you have some?"

Josephine went to the dining hall. She stared at the dishes on the table but had no appetite.

But upon seeing the herbal concoction, she took half a bowl of oatmeal to fill her stomach. It would be agonizing if she took the concoction on an empty stomach.

Mrs. Larson was relieved to see her obediently taking her breakfast and the concoction. Her lips curled into a kind smile.

This time, Lewis never returned for three days.

Josephine didn't go anywhere besides visiting Avery in the hospital. The bodyguards would stop her from visiting Quintin when she expressed her intention.

Avery was still unconscious, and Tyler got her two nurses. Josephine always left after keeping her company for half an hour.

She spent the rest of her day watching television. Everything was back to square one. She was reliving her life when Lewis neglected her, and she was constantly alone at home.

The only difference was she used to wish for him to come home, but now, she hoped he would stay out.

The television broadcasted the news, which was still about Oberon's case.

For the likes of Lewis, they could always make a big deal out of murder cases like these if they wanted to. Likewise, they could easily simmer it down if it was in their favor.

It was the same as the incident Lewis encountered previously. Someone made him the center of attention, andizens were only too glad to condemn him.

After he cleared his name and proved his innocence, his popularity increased instead of dropping. He didn't have a personal social media account. So, tens of millions of followers flocked to the company's official account under his name.

She remembered a joke Avery had told her when they were chatting. With his popularity, even if Lewis went bankrupt one day, he could effortlessly earn a living by starting an online business.

Lewis and Kiran blamed Oberon's death on Milo. So the final version of the news reported a disagreement between Milo and Oberon that eventually led to the forging of the fake will.

It had only been several days since the incident had blown over, but now Oberon's wife was causing a scene.

She wanted to seek justice for her husband. Every day, she would post a video online and get reporters to help her generate media exposure. Therefore, fingers were now pointed at Kiran.

Kiran hadn't been to work these few days. On this day, he suddenly appeared at the company and headed straight for Lewis' office.

Lewis wasn't the least bit surprised at his presence. He put down the document he was holding and smiled at Kiran. "Is anything the matter, President? You haven't been to work these few days."

Kiran sat on the sofa and calmly poured himself a glass of water. "What do you want?"

Lewis had his hands on most of the evidence that showed Kiran was the murderer. Kiran was here to negotiate.

Lewis leaned back in his chair and looked at him, unconcerned. "What can you offer? Or let's put it this way-what do you have that's worth trading?" Kiran paused. Then, he laughed mockingly at himself. "You want my shares?"

Lewis smiled and said nothing. He had made himself clear.

Kiran looked at him. "I won't give them to you. I'm here today to hand in my resignation letter, Chairman Alvarez."

Lewis arched an eyebrow.

Kiran pulled out a resignation letter and casually placed it on the table. "I'll leave Elysium and never interfere with the affairs of Alvarez Corp."

He meant to say he would leave the company but wouldn't hand over his shares. That was as far as he was willing to compromise.

He continued, "To be honest, Oberon's incident was insufficient to drive me into a corner. You can stop dreaming of using it as a threat against me. "To me, the shares from Alvarez Corp are nothing too valuable, but I have to hold on to something as insurance. Am I right, Chairman Alvarez?" Oberon's case was the least of his concern. It wouldn't affect him too much, no matter how big a news it became.

Keeping his shares was a means of safeguarding himself from Veda Group. Handing them over would result in him not being under Alvarez Corp anymore. He would be in deep trouble if Lewis collaborated with Veda Group to stab him in the back.

On the contrary, holding on to his shares guaranteed him as a part of Alvarez Corp. Lewis would have to consider the possibility that Veda Group would attack Alvarez Corp instead if he backstabbed Kiran.

The shares were Kiran's insurance.

Lewis stood and sat before Kiran. He picked up the letter and scanned its content.

He smiled. "I never force someone to act against his will. I have no reason to reject your resignation if that's your wish."

Kiran's gaze pierced through his glasses and fell on Lewis' face. Several moments later, he chuckled. "Chairman Alvarez, I'm suddenly curious." Lewis shot him a glance. "Curiosity kills the cat."

Kiran laughed upon hearing that. Although Lewis might not answer him, he asked anyway. "Why are you doing all this?"

Everyone who offended Lewis had died. The only person who had escaped a similar fate was Daphne, and even she was in jail.

Was it wealth or influence Lewis was after? But what was there to brag about when he obtained everything he wanted by sacrificing the lives of his close ones?

What meaning was there in enjoying all this alone?

Lewis stayed quiet.

Kiran continued, "Let me guess. You can't be doing all this for that mute, can you? But I heard she's back to her normal self. So by doing this, you not only have become an outcast, but that mute also decided to turn her back on you." He asked again, "So why are you doing all this?"

Lewis stared at him intently. The emotions in his eyes were too complicated to decipher. "Back at you, President Kiran. And also, this is not somewhere you should be now since you've resigned. You won't be able to leave if you don't leave now."

Kiran narrowed his eyes, and a glint flashed across them. He finished his glass of water and placed the glass upside down on the table. Chuckling, he got up and left.

After he was gone, Lewis' gaze fell back onto the resignation letter.

Conrad entered. He turned to look at Kiran's silhouette before approaching Lewis and asked, "Sir, any orders?"

"Send someone to keep an eye on him." Lewis casually tore the letter into shreds. "I don't want to see him leave this country alive."
