What Separates Me and You
Chapter 458 No One Will Care

Conrad was stunned and looked at Lewis in shock. "Sir, the commotion over Oberon's case hasn't completely blown over yet. Will it be okay if we ...' Lewis glanced at him. "Conrad."

Chills ran down Conrad's spine. He always felt like he had said something stupid whenever Lewis looked at him this way. "Yes, sir!"

"Does the word 'accident' exist in your vocabulary?"

Conrad lowered his head in shame. "Yes, sir. I know what I should do."

With that, he dared not stay back in the office any longer. He immediately left.

Kiran predicted Lewis would come after him and decided to stay in Elysium for now. He didn't show any intention of leaving the place so far. But Lewis had his ways of forcing Kiran to be on his way.

As Oberon's case played out, Kiran was now the prime suspect, thanks to the evidence Lewis provided. Kiran could only choose to flee Elysium. That night, a black multipurpose vehicle sped along the road with several police cars hot on its tail. Kiran was in the former.

He looked through the rearview mirror at the flashing beacon light, and his lips curved into a smirk.

He took off his glasses and tossed them aside. Then, he stomped on the accelerator. His car darted forward like a bullet from its barrel, leaving a trail of dust in its wake.

He sped through a dense forest. The road slowly transformed into a muddy path, and his car couldn't stop shaking.

After dashing through the trees for some time, the multipurpose vehicle reached a cliff. However, Kiran didn't hesitate as he sped up and bolted right off the cliff.

The cars behind him stopped at the edge, and the police got out of their vehicles. They looked down as they searched with their flashlight. Suddenly, they heard a loud crash and saw flames emerging at the bottom of the cliff. Something exploded down there.

The flames burned briefly before extinguishing. It was like a mere illusion.

"Quick! Search the bottom!"

Conrad relayed the news of Kiran driving off the cliff to Lewis and wiped his forehead. "He can't be alive after falling at such a height, can he?" Lewis' gaze was on the monitor screen. He seemed oblivious to Conrad's question.

Conrad knew he was checking the surveillance cameras. Lewis had stayed at the office these few days and didn't go home. All he did was study the surveillance images. Conrad had no idea what was going through Lewis' mind.

He waited for Lewis' response. When he didn't get any, he turned to leave. But then, Lewis broke the silence. "That's his escape plan. It looks like there's no need for the accident."

Conrad was stunned. He was dumbstruck as he looked at Lewis. It took him a while to understand. "You're saying...'

Lewis finally withdrew his gaze from the monitor screen and looked at Conrad. "He knew I wouldn't let him leave this place alive, so he had been waiting for this opportunity to fake his death and go overseas."

Conrad was surprised. He was amazed not only by the risk Kiran was ready to take but also by how effortlessly Lewis saw through Kiran's plans. Lewis' lips curved into a half smile. "Now, Kiran Alvarez is dead to the eyes of the world. Even if he truly dies, no one will care."

He couldn't believe Kiran would dig his own grave. That was what he got by being too smart for his own good.

Conrad nodded. "Alright. I understand. I'll send some men after him."

The door to the office shut, and silence returned to the room.

Soon, someone knocked. This time, it wasn't Conrad; it was Sophia instead.

She hesitated at the doorway before mustering enough courage to walk in. She approached Lewis and said doubtfully, "Chairman Alvarez."

Lewis glanced at her. "I heard you applied for leave and went home."

Sophia nodded. "I did ... You know everything now, don't you? Chairman Alvarez."

Lewis smiled. "Well done, Ms. King."

Sophia didn't feel delighted at all at his compliment. Instead, she grew uneasy.

"

She didn't manage to bring help though she went home. Not only that, she also attracted the attention of Lewis' subordinates because she left in such a hurry.

Her identity was no longer a secret. She was totally exposed. "Chairman Alvarez, I—"

Lewis raised a hand to cut her off. He looked at her thoughtfully and said softly, "Isn't it a terrible waste of talent for you to be working here as a mere assistant, Ms. King?"

Sophia's face changed as she anxiously spoke up. "Chairman Alvarez, I didn't mean to keep it a secret from you. I just—"

"You don't have to explain. I can forgive you for deceiving me. You now have a chance to redeem yourself."

"What is it?"

"Tell me everything about Seth Fairchild. I mean, everything."

Sophia pressed her lips together. She struggled internally, and her hands fidgeted nervously. She opened her mouth but didn't manage to say anything.

"Why the hesitation? Do you have other concerns?" asked Lewis with a smile. "You can choose not to tell me if you don't feel like it." Sophia immediately blurted out, "It's not that!"

Right after she spoke, she noticed the smile in Lewis' eyes and silently scolded herself for being so rash.

However, she had no other choice now. She inhaled deeply, closed her eyes, and said, "Alright, I'll tell you."

It had been a week since Lewis last returned.

Josephine was bored out of her wits in the mansion. She watched the news on the television every day to know what was happening in the outside world.

She could guess what Lewis was up to.

The finance news occasionally revealed issues in certain companies and reported about others going bankrupt overnight. There were even presidents who were also sentenced to jail.

Although Josephine couldn't be sure they were all related to Lewis, Lewis must have played a role in their crisis somehow.

Frustration grew in Josephine as she followed the news. Given Lewis' begrudging nature, she was concerned about the possibility of her escaping Elysium in one piece.

She grew more frustrated the more she thought about it. She shut the television and got ready to go out.

The bodyguards kept up with her once she stepped into the yard. One asked respectfully, "Madam, where are you going? Do you need a ride?" Josephine glanced at him. "I'm going to the hospital."

"Please wait." The bodyguard drove out a car from the garage. Then, he opened the door and gestured for her to get in.

Before she could do so, she heard a car honk from outside. Looking up, she noticed it was Lewis' car. He finally reappeared after going missing for a week.

He got out of his car and walked toward Josephine in long strides. He was in his usual suit of black but with the coat's buttons unfastened. He looked less strict than he usually was and a bit more casual.

Lewis walked up to Josephine and stared at her before asking, "Where are you going?"

Josephine avoided his eyes and answered readily, "I'm going to the hospital to visit Avery."

Avery regained consciousness two days ago. Josephine would always visit her around this time.

"I'll send you there." Lewis waved the bodyguards away.

Josephine pressed her lips together and got into his car. Well, it was the same no matter whose car she got into.

Lewis got in and started the engine. The car glided out of the mansion, as quiet as always. No one took the initiative to start a conversation.

Ever since he left that night, he had grown more reserved. There seemed to be an uncanny change in their relationship.

They might as well be strangers.
