What Separates Me and You -
Chapter 460 A Blessed Life
It was Conrad. He paused when he saw Josephine. He didn't think she would be here. Could these two have made peace with each other? He dared not ask too much and quickly went to Lewis. "Yes, sir?"
Lewis glanced at him. "Assign her a job."
Conrad looked back at Josephine and restrained the questions emerging in his mind. He then asked, "Should she resume her original position?"
Josephine heard him and immediately sprung up from her seat. "No."
Lewis replied, "It's her choice."
Conrad nodded to acknowledge Lewis' instructions. Then, he said to Josephine, "Madam, please come with me."
Josephine immediately followed Conrad out.
Then, Conrad asked, "So, do you have a preferred department in mind, madam?"
Josephine gave it some thought. "Anything will do. As long as no one recognizes me."
She didn't want to be labeled as Lewis' wherever she went. She wanted to be the master of her own life. She wanted to prove that she could survive even when separated from Lewis.
Conrad thought about it. That was no easy feat. It would have been simpler if Lewis hadn't waltzed into the company with her before this. The majority of the employees saw them then.
He led Josephine out while pondering which department was suitable for Josephine. They ran into Seth on their way down. He was coming out of the elevator.
Josephine's eyes lit up the moment she saw him. But then she remembered what Lewis said, and the light in her eyes dimmed.
Seth noticed the change in her emotions. He stared at her for a couple of seconds before leaving the elevator, smiling.
"Where have you been, Mr. Fairchild? I've been looking for you," said Conrad.
Seth was wearing a suit for a change. The beige suit gave his striking features a gentle touch.
He stopped before them. His gaze swept passed Josephine and fell on Conrad. "I was outstation. Do I have to report to you?"
Conrad looked at him suspiciously. He didn't know about that, but then again, it wasn't required of Seth to inform him, a mere assistant.
Seth continued, "The chairman instructed me to run a check through the accounts before this. I found several inconsistencies. So I went to the Internal Revenue Service and a few other companies to have them checked."
Conrad recalled. Seth was still settling the mess in their accounts.
He didn't know much about Seth's task, but he knew every detail about the conflicts between Seth and Lewis. It seemed absurd to him that they could continue to work in peace in the same company.
"Where are you two going?" Seth asked.
Conrad answered, "I'm assigning Madam a job. I'm still thinking about which department suits her better."
He told Seth Josephine's requests. Seth mulled over it and smiled. "That's simple. She can try out a position at the new media management department in the marketing department."
Conrad thought it was workable.
That department wasn't in this building block. It was in another building block that housed only the new media management department. The department's job scope covered a wide range. They would accept any task that was related to the Inte.
It had only been established two years ago. Lewis didn't interfere much in their operation. He allowed them freedom and left them to fend for themselves.
The department thrived since its establishment. In fact, as the use of the Inte rapidly grew, their job scope expanded as well. They were progressing at an alarming rate. They would soon become an essential branch of the Alvarez Corp.
"Alright. I'll lead her there." Conrad decided on it and beckoned Josephine, "Madam, let's go."
Josephine nodded. She looked at Seth again. All she saw was his smiling face and nothing else. He looked just like before.
Josephine wasn't sure what plans he had, but she noticed he was intentionally keeping a distance from her. So, she could only cooperate and pretend they weren't close.
Conrad brought Josephine to the new media management department. He approached the manager and passed Josephine to him.
Rick Forbis, the manager, was in his 30s and looked young. He sized up Josephine. Seeing as how Conrad was the one who brought her here, he asked, "Mr. Berg, is she new here?"
Conrad thought about it and nodded. "Yes, she is. You can assign her any task you deem fit."
Which meant Rick didn't have to mind Conrad. That was what Josephine wanted too.
She didn't want anyone to know her identity and wanted to experience the working life. As a matter of course, Conrad satisfied her requests. "Alright. Got it."
Conrad was about to give Josephine some advice before he decided against it. Now that she was back to her usual self, she would be alright, wouldn't she?
At that thought, Conrad ceased worrying and left.
Rick sized up Josephine again and asked, "What is your expertise?"
Josephine answered honestly, "I'm not sure, either."
Rick was stunned. If it weren't for her earnest eyes, he would have thought she was trying to provoke him. Recalling that Conrad had been the one to bring her here, Rick patiently asked, "Then what was your major?" Josephine looked down in embarrassment. "Education. I was in that major for two years but never graduated."
She once dreamed of becoming a teacher for the population that was both deaf and couldn't speak. After Alan passed away and she married Lewis, Nancy forbade her from attending college.
Nancy was worried that Josephine would tarnish the Alvarez family's reputation if others realized Josephine was Lewis' wife. She even mocked her and said it was best that a mute like Josephine stayed home. She also said it was useless for her to get a degree.
So, Josephine stopped going to college, and Lewis became the center of her life.
Josephine felt suffocated whenever she remembered the past. It was as if someone was squeezing the air out of her lungs.
She had been thinking. She would have lived a blessed life if it weren't for Alan.
She would have a happy family with loving parents and siblings. She would have an ambition of her own and be more blessed than most people in the world.
It would have been so different. But now, she was useless and a complete failure. And to add to her despair, she didn't know who to hate.
Alan, Robert, and Lily were dead. Even Daphne was in jail. Those who had bullied her were all dead except for Nancy.
Lewis did it all. In other words, he avenged her. He nearly eliminated all his family members using such atypical methods.
Regardless of whether he did it all for his own benefit or for ... Still, Josephine had no reason to hate him. However, she couldn't forgive him either.
So, the best she could do was to leave him forever and ensure they wouldn't meet each other ever again.
Rick didn't know what was going through her head. He merely sighed when he saw the forlorn look on her face.
He called someone over, who passed Josephine to Owen Connor.
The person he called over was in charge of the social media department. He oversaw the company's social media accounts, including those for vloggers and live streamers.
Owen was in charge of maintaining their department's image and editing tasks.
Upon understanding Josephine's situation, he guided her to the department. He explained, "Chairman Alvarez doesn't focus much on our department. So, Mr. Forbis, whom you just met, wields the authority here.
"Our role appears modest compared to the other divisions within Alvarez Corp. But our yearly profit is only slightly lower than theirs. Since you lack work experience, you can start as a trainee on the photography team."
