What Separates Me and You
Chapter 482 Please Don't Leave

Conrad's final sentence hit Josephine hard. It left her disoriented. Her mind was in a mess.

All this while, her thoughts revolved around how to escape him, but she never considered the idea of him dying.

Conrad's words had stumped her.

If Lewis were to die, would she finally be free?

Josephine closed her eyes, unable to find an answer.

Yet often, the absence of an answer was an answer in itself.

She hung up the phone and exited the room to have the bodyguards drive her to Magic Cube.

Soon, she arrived at Magic Cube. The manager was waiting at the door of Lewis' private room. Seeing Josephine approaching, he knew help was here.

"Are you a friend of Mr. Alvarez?"

Josephine nodded. "Yes, what's happened to him?"

Troubled, the manager sighed. "He came the night before yesterday and hasn't left since. He ordered so much alcohol last night and was still drinking when we closed. It was the same today. If this goes on, I'm afraid ..."

After all, it was Lewis. How would they handle the situation if he drank himself to death here?

"I'll take a look."

Josephine pushed open the door. The smell of smoke and alcohol hit her, causing her to cough uncontrollably.

The private room was dimly lit. As Josephine stepped inside, she nearly stumbled over a beer bottle.

The bodyguards behind her instructed the manager to turn on all the lights in the private room.

As the lights flooded the room, Josephine could finally see everything.

Empty bottles were strewn across the floor and the table, both opened and unopened. Some drinks were spilled on the ground, forming puddles of alcohol.

The manager explained from behind. "He wouldn't let us come in and clean up. That's why it's such a mess ..."

Josephine's gaze landed on the figure huddled in the corner. Lewis was sprawled across the sofa, a half-empty bottle of alcohol by his side. Its contents were dripping onto the floor.

As she approached, she noticed another figure lying unconscious on the floor beside him. It was a woman.

She couldn't tell if she was alive or not.

The manager had someone carry the woman away, and Josephine approached Lewis. She shook his shoulder. "Lewis, wake up.

Lewis kept his eyes tightly shut, his brows furrowing as if annoyed by her voice.

At least he was alive.

Josephine pushed him a couple more times.

"Lewis!"

He finally responded and opened his eyes slightly. However, the lights were too bright. He raised his arm to shield his eyes. "Turn off the lights." His voice was hoarse.

Josephine turned off the lights, leaving only the glow from the screen on the wall.

Sitting beside Lewis, she gently removed his hand from his face and patted his cheek. "Lewis? Are you okay?"

Lewis tilted his head slightly, his unfocused gaze resting on her face. Without saying anything, he stared at her. "Get up, I'm taking you back."

Josephine grabbed his arm and tried to pull him up but failed.

Instead, Lewis grabbed her wrist and pulled her back. Then, she felt a weight on her. Lewis collapsed on her.

He rested his head on her shoulder and murmured, "Josie."

The people behind discreetly left the room and closed the door behind them.

Josephine was momentarily shocked. "It seems you can recognize me, so stop pretending to be unconscious. Get off."

"

He nuzzled against her neck, his unshaven stubble brushing against her skin. He didn't shave for two days, so his beard was slightly pricky.

Josephine tilted her head to avoid his touch and pushed him away with her hand. "Lewis, move away!"

"Josie, let me sing you a song."

Holding her close, he whispered, "What do you want to hear?"

"I don't want to hear anything."

Yet it seemed like he didn't hear her response at all. He continued to sing into her ear.

"Those scattered by the wind said he didn't love much.

"The person who got wet by the rain said he would not be cold.

"How many people will be blinded by the boundless night?

"He wrote it in his eyes."

His pace was slow, and his voice was deep. He seemed to put all his emotions into the song.

Mesmerized, Josephine sat there. The man's singing filled her ears.

After a few lines, his voice grew softer until it eventually faded into a low chuckle.

A hint of bitterness and helplessness filled his chuckle.

He sounded lonely too.

Josephine's eyes flickered. For one second, she forgot to move.

She had never heard Lewis sing nor knew he could sing. She hadn't expected such an emotionally charged performance from him.

Did he learn it from that woman earlier?

Josephine was still lost in thought when Lewis let go of her. He ended up flopping onto the nearby couch.

She turned to look at him, only to find him staring blankly at the ceiling. Two buttons of his shirt were undone, and she could see his Adam's apple from this angle.

Josephine reached out to him again. "Let's go."

Yet he pulled her into his embrace once more. This time, she ended up sprawled across his chest.

Struggling to get up, Josephine found herself being held tightly by him.

She felt a faint sense of panic rising, and suddenly, the low, hoarse voice of the man sounded above her.

"What should I do?"

Blinking, Josephine slowly lifted her head to glance at him.

Keeping his gaze lowered, Lewis stared at her face. However, he seemed in a daze.

Then he closed his eyes again. As if speaking to himself, he said, "I don't know what else to do now."

Josephine pursed her lips, her expression complex.

The room fell dead silent.

The door isolated the sounds from outside. The bustling atmosphere outside was a stark contrast to the tranquility in the room.

Lewis opened his eyes again and stared at Josephine deeply.

His lips twitched, and he tried to force a smile.

He gently traced Josephine's cheek and whispered, "I'll avenge you. But please don't go, okay?"

Josephine saw a hint of helplessness in his eyes for the first time.

He said, "It wasn't me. I didn't do it."

His words were incoherent, likely a sign that he was really drunk.

These were never something he would say under normal circumstances. That was why he was struggling to say it.

However, Josephine understood what he meant.

She remembered how much she cried when Daphne accused her of stealing when they were young. Even though she didn't do it, she was punished for something she didn't do.

She couldn't explain herself because she was mute. So she had to accept the punishment obediently.

She had hoped for Lewis to return and save her.

But what about Lewis?

Who could he hope to save him?

Josephine found herself speechless at that moment. She had once desperately wished to speak, but now, she found herself longing to be mute again.

"I know a fun place. Shall I bring you there?"

He pinched her cheeks, a smile appearing on his lips. In that fleeting moment, Josephine seemed to have seen the Lewis from the past.

He was taller than her, but he always crouched down to talk to her. He enjoyed pinching her cheeks and smiling at her.

As Josephine was lost in her thoughts, Lewis suddenly sat up and grabbed her hand, leading her outside.

He was swaying and stumbling as if he could fall at any moment.

Josephine opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but she didn't know what to say. She could only follow him.

Seeing them come out, Conrad breathed a sigh of relief.

However, he noticed that Lewis was taking Josephine toward the parking lot. Clearly drunk, he couldn't find his car. He attempted to open several cars, yet it was all in vain.

Frustrated, he ended up pounding on the window of a car.
