Alpha’s Black Furred Slave Mate -
Chapter 109
I ducked and covered as the battleground exploded. Bits and pieces of the king's ground flew all over the place; smoke filled the air so I couldn't see if there were any survivors. I was lucky enough to be a distance away, so I wasn't hit or hurt, but the ringing in my
ears was surreal.
I couldn't hear anything, and I could hardly see anything. The smoke filled my lungs quickly and coughed to try to remove it from my lungs. I pushed my way through the smoke and stumbled across some bodies of the dead. I grimaced at the blood as I came across these bodies; they all looked burned to a crisp and blood soaking through the dirt that surrounded us.
My breathing grew shaky as I continued walking through the battlegrounds; praying that I could find some survivors.
As my hearing started returning, I heard some screams of the injured and some screams of terror from some others.
I screamed out for Marlon.
I screamed out for Kamala.
She was in the air a moment ago, and now she was completely gone. Like she vanished in thin air. This was all my fault. I shouldn't have let her come here alone. I shouldn't have let any of this happen. I was so stupid to think this was going to work. I should have been here sooner to stop this from happening. I shouldn't have got her mixed up in the likes of the Roessler's.
She never wanted this; she didn't want any of this and I still forced it on her. I was such a bad friend, and my heart broke at the thought of losing her forever.
"Deonna?" I heard my name from not far.
I squinted through the smoke and saw Marlon limping towards me. His features were pale and bloody from the explosion, but also dirt from the soot and smoke that surrounded us.
He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close.
"Were you hurt?" He asked, staring around my body for signs of injuries.
I shook my head, unable to utter any words.
"No," I told him. "I'm not..."
I looked around again for Kamala, worried because I didn't see her. Come to think of it, I wasn't seeing Bob either and Marlon also looked worriedly around. "Bob?" I asked.
"I lost him in the explosion," he said, worry lacing his tone. "He ran towards her as she exploded..."
She exploded.
"What?" I whispered, hardly audible.
He looked sad for a moment.
"It looked like she exploded, but I couldn't tell," Marlon said softly.
No. This couldn't be happening. She can't be gone. I felt a sob escape my throat and I covered my hands with my mouth. He held onto me tighter.
"We need to get out of here," he said, tugging me towards a clearing.
"What about everyone else?" I asked, staring around. "Is everyone dead?"
"I don't know," Marlon urged. "But I need to get you out of here, Deonna."
"I can't leave without knowing that Kamala is alright," I screamed to him, trying to pull my arm away from his grasp.
"Deonna, you need to get to safety," he argued. "You're pregnant."
"I'm well aware of that," I shouted, tugging my arm again until he finally released me. "She's my best friend and she's the only other family I got right now. I need to find her." He sighed and looked around again, still looking unsure.
"It's not looking great," he said, eyeing me carefully.
"You should want to find Bob," I told him firmly.
He looked taken back for a moment but then his expression softened as he nodded.
"I do," he agreed. "I want to find my son. But he was right next to her. If everyone around them and further from them died, I'm not holding my breath that they made it."
I understood where he was coming from, but I had a bond with Kamala much stronger than that we both always knew when each other was dead or in trouble. It's been like that since were children on the slave farm. Outlook might not be looking good, and a lot of wolves were dead, but I had faith that Kamala was alive.
I don't think she would have let Bob die either; somehow, I believe she survived the explosion and Bob survived with her. I just had to figure out where they were.
"She was in the center, right?" I asked.
Marlon nodded.
"Follow me," I ordered as I ran into the smoke.
I heard him groan from behind me, but he didn't argue or try to persuade me into running in the opposite direction. He followed closely behind me, silently. We both searched the grounds until we came to another clearing.
As I broke through the smoke I coughed, breathing in the fresh air and draining my lungs of all the smoke and soot that it was filled with. I blinked a few times and as I adjusted my eyes to the faint streetlighting, I gasped as I saw Bob kneeling over a passed-out Kamala. Both of which were fully intact.
Kamala was completely unconscious, and I worried for her when I approached, but Bob was more than alive.
Marlon looked shocked as well as he ran toward his son; relief flooding his face.
"Bob?" Marlon said, lunging toward his son and hugging him. "I can't believe you are alive."
"It was so weird," Bob whispered as he stared at Kamala.
I was relieved to see that she was faintly breathing, which meant she was alive. But for how long?
"What happened?" I asked him, not taking my eyes off Kamala.
"I saw her lighting up, and the shield around her kept getting bigger. I ran toward her because I wanted to try to get her down and protect her. But then she exploded..." Bob whispered.
I frowned and kept staring at her.
"She doesn't look like she exploded," I pointed out.
"I know, that's because it didn't touch her. The explosion went around her. I realized it was going around me too. Like a shield was protecting me somehow. I watched the explosion happen and I watched everyone around me nearly perish. But I didn't get touched," he explained.
He was in shock as he stared down at his hands.
"I couldn't believe what I was seeing... I don't know how it was possible," he finished explaining in a whisper.
I looked over at him and gave him a faint smile.
"It's because she was protecting you," I told him. "She knew you were there, and she was protecting you."
"What happened? The energy around her was so... dark," he breathed, staring up at me with misty eyes. He could feel her dark energy.
"That magic that Nyx had given her was light magic. But when she used it to break the shield around the castle, the dark magic drained her of that light magic and replaced it with its dark magic. Which is why she was losing control and almost lost her life..." I explained. His eyes widened.
"What would have happened if I didn't interfere?" Bob asked,
"It's hard to say," I answered. "But from the looks of things, I'm assuming there would have been an explosion."
"So, what's going to happen to her now? Has the dark magic completely consumed her?" Bob asked.
"Why didn't you tell us this before?" Marlon asked, stepping forward. "Before we had her do this."
I frowned and stared at him.
"We shouldn't have let her do this in the first place," I said firmly, narrowing my eyes at him. "She almost lost her life the first time she did this and now you want to jeopardize that again?"
He looked taken back for a moment, but his gaze softened as he realized I was right. It was a selfish move.
"I don't know what's going to happen. Neither of us does. We just figured out recently what was going on. Her body rejects the wolf now and she's feeling much weaker and more tired than she had before. But we aren't sure what's going to happen," I told them. "So, the darkness could consume her?" Bob asked again, sounding defeated.
"Yes," I answered. "It could."
