Frederick; spying on Marlon and working on the inside while Frederick worked on the outside and kept his eyes on Deonna.

Petra stood in front of Marlon with a gun pointed at him. She was red in the face as fury flashed through her eyes. She was out for blood, and she wanted Marlon gone. He couldn't believe that she's been working against him this entire time. She's been working with Deonna was supposedly Frederick's sister; not that Deonna knew about that. Technically, this castle was partly owned by Deonna. She wasn't just a dark-furred wolf, and she wasn't just a slave. She was a duchess. It's been hidden her entire life and now the truth was finally being revealed. He wondered if the king knew this information as well; he wondered if Deonna's adoptive parents knew. He remembered that Deonna was placed in an orphanage until she was around 3 years old. Because she was a dark-furred wolf, she was treated poorly. They hardly fed her, made her sleep on the cold ground with no blankets and pillows, and they made her do slave work before she was even able to walk. She spent her first 3 years on the planet alone, cold, and hungry.

Then her adoptive parents came to the orphanage in hopes of finding a young child to care for due to not being able to have children of their own. They saw small, dirty, and lonely Deonna sitting in the corner. They instantly fell in love with the young girl and requested for her to be adopted.

So, they brought Deonna back to their village where they showed Deonna love and compassion; they fed her and treated her as part of the family. It was something she never had and she was beyond grateful for it. As Deonna aged, her memory of the orphanage began disappearing. But she remembered stories that her parents would tell her about how they found her there and the condition she was in.

When she first brought her home to the village, she was terrified. She wasn't sure what to expect. But after a couple of months, she realized that her new family wasn't going to hurt her and they only wanted to protect her. So, she began opening up to them a bit more and trusting them.

But they never once told her that she was a descendant of the dukes. They never once mentioned that she came from practical royalty and that she was destined to be a duchess, or at least owned a share of the duke's castle.

It made Marlon wonder if they even knew to begin with. It wasn't in her medical or background files. So maybe it wasn't something anybody knew. Except for Frederick of course.

He knew.

According to Petra, Frederick was there the day that his mother, Elianna, gave birth to Deonna. Petra isn't sure what happened to Frederick after that because once Deonna was born, Frederick was sent away, back to the castle. Elianna remained in the barn where she gave birth to Deonna with her mister, and Deonna's father, Robert.

After that, everything was unclear. Petra isn't sure what happened to Elianna or Robert. But obviously, they put Deonna in an orphanage.

It seemed as though Frederick has been out to get Deonna this entire time. Or at least keep her from knowing the truth because he didn't want her returning for what was rightfully and partly hers, to begin with.

He didn't want to share the duke's estate with a dark-furred wolf.

But now Frederick was gone and there was no one left of this family considering that Frederick never had children of his own. The duke's family had died in an overdo war years ago, leaving Frederick to be the only survivor left and the sole duke of North-Valley. Or so he thought.

Alex somehow convinced the king to allow him to take on the reins as duke and regain the power of North-Valley.

It might have worked for a little while, but now that Marlon knew the truth, he wasn't going to allow his son to take what belongs to Deonna.

He wasn't going to allow his son to conquer either of these kingdoms because neither belonged to him. He was cutting Alex off together. This plan of his was coming to an end.

He heard the cocking of the gun as Petra stood with the ammo pointed at him. Her fingers were trembling against the trigger; he could tell that she had never actually shot a gun before and for some reason, he wasn't worried.

His wolf was keeping him calm and telling him not to worry. She might be a sadistic, manipulative, and insane woman, but she wasn't strong enough to pull the trigger and kill him. Regardless of who she's sleeping with, which happens to be his son.

Even if she was working against Marlon this entire time, he knew her feelings for him were real. He would have dropped everything she was doing if it meant being with Marlon and ruling the kingdom with him. She didn't care about North-Valley, she wanted Mooncrest because that was one of the top kingdoms and the strongest pack. He was the highest-ranked nobleman.

There was no way she would have gone against him given the choice.

He took a step closer to her and her eyes widened.

"Don't come any closer," she said, the fear in her voice giving her away.

"Petra..." he said, keeping his voice calm. "Put the gun down."

"I'm warning you. I'm going to shoot you," she said, her voice weakened and breathless.

"You don't want to shoot me," Marlon said to her, keeping his eyes steadily on hers. He could see the fear she was feeling; she almost looked as though she was about to burst into tears at any moment. "I know you don't want to shoot me."

"I want the power," she said through her gritted teeth. "Alex promised..." she tried to say but Marlon scoffed, interrupting her words.

"Alex lied to you," Marlon told her. "He doesn't care about you Petra and he's certainly not going to share his power with you. He's using you to get what he wants because he knows how desperate you are."

"That's a lie!" Petra hissed, tears forming in her eyes.

"It's not a lie. Petra, you know me. You loved me. You worked for me for a while; even though I know you were working for the duke and against me, you still worked for me. You also know what my sons are capable of..." Marlon tried to reason with her. She was silent for a moment.

"Petra..." he began again. "Alex is using you. I don't know what his plan for you is, but he's not being truthful to you. I can promise you that."

"He promised to marry me and make me his mistress and duchess. I can rule beside him for both of these kingdoms. Then together, we can work on conquering the others," Petra told him; her hand was trembling uncontrollably.

"I know my son, Petra. He's not planning on marrying you. I can promise you that," Marlon said softly, holding his hand up in defeat.

"You don't know that..." Petra said between her tears.

"I do..." Marlon tried to say.

"No, you don't!!!!" Petra screeched.

"He might not. But I do..." Bob said from the doorway. He was standing at the door breathless; he didn't look angry to Marlon's relief, but he looked concerned. Deonna and Kamala were right behind him as they tumbled into the room.

They broke the shield.
