Bedmates Soulmates -
CHAPTER 207
The President's Baby
'Yes, Sir! Thank you, Sir!' Kira pushed the door open and jumped out of the car before Austyn could change his mind.
The light had turned green.
The Hummer rolled forward slowly.
Austyn watched Kira jog to the sidewalk with a spring in her step.
She made it there safely.
Austyn stepped on the gas.
Kira arrived at the office with one minute to spare.
She punched in, panting.
Vanessa came to her as soon as she sat down. 'Kira!'
Oh, hi, Vanessa. Good morning."
'I haven't seen you for a few days. How're you feeling? Paul said you were out sick'
'I was, but I'm fine now. Thanks for asking.'
'Sure, sure. Vanessa leaned in and whispered. 'So, who was the man?"
'What?' Kira stared at her blankly.
"I was at the bus stop when I saw you get out of a car. It was a big, black, expensive-looking car.
Vanessa stroked her chin. 'Now come to think of it, it looks like the president's car."
She narrowed her eyes. 'Did I see you get out of Mr McCarthy's car?'
Uh-oh.
Kira had to think on her feet.
She faced Vanessa and smiled at her. 'Since you saw it, there's no point in denying it anymore. Yes, I got out of the president's car.
""You did?' Vanessa's eyes widened.
Kira nodded, feigning seriousness. 'Do you know why?"
Vanessa stared at her, open-mouthed.
'I got out of his car because he and I-the president and I-have been having an affair.'
The
Vanessa's jaw dropped.
'A steamy, passionate affair. We can't keep our hands off each other. In fact, we got married a year ago. I'm no longer Kira Hewitt. I'm Mrs McCarthy." Vanessa stood still as a statue.
When she finally moved, she reached out a hand and touched Kira's forehead.
'Are you running a fever?'
'No, I'm fine. Why?"
"Then why are you spouting nonsense as if you're delirious?""
'It's not nonsense. I'm telling you the truth!'
Vanessa snorted. 'Sure. If you're Mrs McCarthy, then I'm Mrs Clooney.'
'I think that position has already been filled."
'Still, one can dream."
'So you don't believe me?'
'Do I look that gullible?' Vanessa rolled her eyes. Why stop with the marriage? Why not go ahead and say you have a child with him?"
'Well, since you brought it up...' Kira's hand went to her belly. 'You know I was away on a leave, right? I wasn't sick. The truth is, I went to the hospital for a checkup.
Kira lowered her eyes and offered a bashful smile. "The doctors told me I'm two months pregnant. It's Mr McCarthy's baby."
Vanessa gave Kira a playful swat on her arm. 'Stop pulling my leg! You're even more delusional than me."
Mr McCarthy, aka Mr McDreamboat, was the man of every woman's dreams.
He belonged to everyone and no one.
Kira breathed a quiet sigh of relief when Vanessa moved on to other topics.
Bullet dodged, for now.
If her relationship with Austyn came to light, Kira didn't think she would be able to find any peace at the office.
She might be forced to leave the company.
Luckily, Vanessa couldn't be sure of what she saw.
It was the morning rush hour.
There were plenty of pedestrians and cars about.
Kira vowed to be more careful next time.
If Austyn insisted on driving her to work, she would request a Stop at leas
from the office building.
Her day at the office passed quickly.
Kira was swamped with work.
She got another call from Dr Morrison at six pm.
'Miss Hewitt, the man is here again."
'He's there right now?
five blocks away
"Yes. He actually showed up at noon, but left before I could call you. Now he's back'
The doctor was whispering.
He was hiding in the stairwell to make the call, keeping an eye on the stranger.
'I thought of having security escort him off premises, but he could be a relative or a friend, so I held back.
"Thank you, Doctor. Can you stall him? I'll be right there."
'Sure.'
Kira was already out of her seat when she hung up the phone.
She saved her documents on the computer and swept her belongings into her bag.
'Hey, what's the rush?' Vanessa called after her. I was thinking we could have dinner!"
'Sorry, gotta go!'
Then Kira thought of something and turned around. 'I just got a call from the president. He's taking me out to a three-star restaurant for a romantic dinner. Vanessa tossed a balled-up tissue at her. 'Get your head out of the clouds!'
Kira jogged off, laughing.
Vanessa shook her head at her deranged colleague..
Kira flagged down a taxi and headed straight for the hospital.
Rush hour traffic moved at a snail's pace.
Kira tapped her foot and resisted the urge to wrest the steering wheel from the driver.
She jumped out of the taxi before it came to a complete stop and bounded up the stairs.
The Presidents kaby
Dr Morrison was in his office.
He reassured her that her father was doing well.
'He could wake up one day. Don't lose hope.'
Kira no longer jumped for joy at the familiar refrain.
"Thank you, Doctor Morrison. I'll go and see my father now. Is the man still there?"
'I can't say. I got called away half an hour ago and just came back. If you see him there and don't recognise him, you should call security and have him removed."
'I will. Thank you, Doctor.'
Kira caught her breath and headed for her father's ward one floor up.
She ran several scenarios through her mind.
It couldn't be Georgina and Helen.
Could it be Helen's second husband, Michael Vaughn?
Kira shook her head.
What would that man want with her father?
She took the stairs.
When she came out to the hallway, she saw the man leaning against the wall outside her father's ward.
He was clean-shaven, tall and lean.
He was standing in profile.
But Kira didn't need to see the whole face to recognise the man.
She stood stock-still.
The air around her seemed to have turned into molasses.
She couldn't move a step.
