Bedmates Soulmates
CHAPTER 462

He pointed at Kira. 'Why can't she do it?"

'Do you think she can go out in a dress like that? Austyn glared at him.

Doctor Clase The Hirvia lloy

Kira was stunned."

Austyn was doing this for her?

Jesse rolled his eyes. 'You could've called your assistant.'

'Kai's not here. He has more important things to do."

'And I don't? I have patients to see and surgeries to perform, you know.'

'No, you don't.' Austyn shot him a look. 'You were planning to go home and sleep.

Jesse paused.

Then he sighed heavily. 'Fine. I'll do it. Just this once, though. And I'm sending you the bill with a hundred per cent service charge.

Austyn tipped his chin towards the door. 'Stop dawdling.'

Jesse shook his head. 'I wonder how Kai ever puts up with you.'

Kira closed the door after Jesse left.

She wrung her hands. 'Um...""

She should thank Austyn.

He was sick, yet he still had the presence of mind to take care of her.

'I'm going to rest now,' Austyn said flatly, closing his eyes.

Kira's words of gratitude were stuck in her throat.

He'd switched back to 'aloof' mode again.

Kira plonked herself down on the chair.

Soul-crushing Despair

Jesse came back twenty minutes later.

'Here.' He tossed two shopping bags onto the bed. "Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap. They don't have women's clothes, so I got you a men's t-shirt. It should fit."

He added, 'If it doesn't, call Kai. Don't call me.'

Kira nodded. 'Okay, thank you.'

She had wanted to change out of the dress hours ago.

Jesse jutted his chin at Austyn. 'I'm going to send you the bill. Don't be stingy with the tips.

Then he took off before Austyn could assign him more errands to run.

Kira checked the IV bag.

It was still more than two-thirds full.

Austyn's eyes were closed.

Either sleeping, or faking it.

Kira picked up the bags and headed into the bathroom.

The hot shower brought her back to life.

It washed away crusts of dried blood from her arms and calmed her jittery nerves.

She towel-dried her hair and brushed her teeth.

Her face in the mirror looked almost back to normal except for the bruises on her cheeks.

At least she looked better than the man lying in bed less than ten feet away.

Kira recalled how viciously Sean had beaten up Austyn, raining blow after blow on him.

A sharp pang of guilt shot through her heart every time she thought about this.

Austyn could have overpowered Sean, but took the blows because Sean threatened him with her life.

When Doctor Chase first asked her if she had feelings for Austyn, she had been clear in her answer-she did not.

But she couldn't be so sure if he asked her again.

She'd lived in self-denial for long enough.

Yes, she had feelings for Austyn.

Soul practing Despat

More than she'd imagined.

He pointed a gun at his own head for her.

He was willing to give up his life for her.

What woman wouldn't fall for a man like that?

But as she splashed more cold water on her face, Kira started having second thoughts.

She liked-no, loved-Austyn, but she was pretty sure that feeling would not be reciprocated.

His heart only had a place for Deborah and no one else, just like he only carried Deborah's picture with him and no one else's.

Kira had always believed that unrequited love was not love; it was obsession.

It was a hole in your heart that could never be filled.

It was a voice in your head telling you you would never be good enough for that person.

It was constant self-doubt.

It was perpetual gloom when you couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

It was soul-crushing despair.

Should she go down that road?

Kira tried to look at last night in a more objective light.

Austyn must have made a plan with Luca and Damian.

He provoked Sean into giving him a beating probably as a distraction, a stalling tactic so Lucal and Damian could incapacitate the mercenaries upstairs.

He was buying time.

He did save her.

He did take the beating for her.

He almost put a bullet through his head for her.

Kira was immensely grateful.

But she wasn't sure if he did all that out of love.

Austyn never said expressed his feelings to her.

He never even said he liked her.

The last time he helped her, he said he would never let his woman be pushed around.

Soul puching Despor

It had nothing to do with who that woman was.

He would protect her as long as she was Mrs McCarthy.

But whether it was Kira McCarthy, or Kayleigh McCarthy, or Deborah McCarthy, would it make any difference to him?

'Probably not,' Kira thought, smiling bitterly at her reflection in the mirror.

It was a territorial thing, a pride thing.

Not a love thing.

'Snap out of it.' She patted her cheeks. 'Don't be so greedy."

She had no right to demand Austyn's affection, let alone love. He saved her.

She should be thankful for that.

She would try to do everything in her power to return the favour.

But she was in no position to ask him to love her

Superman saved millions of people and stole the hearts of women everywhere.

But it didn't mean he must love them back, right?

Kira hesitated before leaving the bathroom.

When she walked out, she was wearing just an oversized t-shirt which ended mid-thigh.

Her hair was still a little wet.

She wasn't wearing the high-heels.

Austyn's eyes were drawn to her bare legs.

Kira approached the bedside table to pour herself a glass of water.

She was parched.

When she saw Austyn staring at her, she asked, 'Do you want some water?'

His lips were chapped.

Austyn didn't reply.

His Adam's apple bobbed.
