Chapter 0056 Caroline's POV:

My gaze, steeped in suspicion, remained locked on William's Caller ID. Was it really William who tried to kill my father? If so, what could I even do? He was rich and powerful and got everything he wanted with just a snap of his fingers. In the eyes of the media, I was just a pathetic ex wife.

If William really was capable of coldly murdering my father, why did he choose today of all days? He fully knew I was eager to see my dad as soon as possible. Maybe this brutal attempt on my dad's life was retribution for the "les" he claimed I was feeding him. It seemed unreal to blame my ex-husband for my father's frighteningly close death, but it was the only logical explanation that appeared in my mind. William was the only suspect who knew the secret of my father's private location, after all.

I couldn't stand my own swirling thoughts anymore. I needed answers or else I would have another breakdown. Without a second thought, I hurriedly punched in William's number.

After the third ring, William answered, sounding exasperated before he even got the first word out. "Caroline. What do you want?"

"Do you know what happened to my father, William," I demanded, cutting right to the chase.

"Excuse me?" he growled.

"You heard me," I snapped. "My dad's oxygen tube was disconnected. Did you have anything to do with it? Yes or no?"

William sputtered in anger, speechless. "You little-" I could hear him seething with rage No, I didn't do anything to your dad! Do you know how much money I've spent on his care? You really are an ungrateful woman, Caroline.'

A surge of fury shot through me. "My father almost died!" I yelled into the phone. "You told me he would be safe here, and yet someone just tried to kill him! My father was perfectly fine in the hospital, but then you thoughtlessly moved him here, where he's in grave danger."

I heard William scoff indignantly on the other end. "So, what? You think that means I want him dead?"

"I don't know, William. Does it?" My voice was rich with spite. "It was your people taking care of him. You hate him so much that you've tried to ruin his life, and you married me just to spite him! How do you expect me to think you're innocent?"

"You have no right to throw around blame, Caroline," he growled low. "Not after how you've been stringing me along. You don't get to play victim this time! If I wanted your father dead, why would I wait this long, huh?"

My frail body was shaking with rage. "Because you're obsessed, William."

William chuckled in disbelief on the other end. "I don't have to take this. Say hi to your dad for me."

With that, he callously hung up, leaving me in complete silence. I stared blankly at my phone for a long while, my mind a muddled disaster of confusion. Would William actually go as far as killing my dad? As much as I wanted to point an accusing finger and have my perfect answer, was William actually insane enough to do that?

If it wasn't William, though, then who was it? Everything in my life was such a chaotic mess. My head felt jumbled up with worry and paranoia

One of the staff members swiftly returned: a security guard with a firm frown set on his face." Miss Caroline?" I looked up at him, silent and trembling, and I just nodded curtly at him to let him speak. "We tried to pull security footage of the incident." My eyes grew wide with hope. "And? What did you see?" I asked eagerly.

The guard removed his hat and let out a rough sigh. "I'm afraid the footage was accidentally deleted."

"Accidentally?" I balked. "How does footage get accidentally' deleted?"

"We think it might have been an issue with the equipment," he explained steadily. "We promise we'll try everything we can to recover the original footage."

Yet another accident! I could hardly believe the world around me anymore. Why was this happening to my dad?

I couldn't accept the immense danger that plagued my father's life. I desperately needed to get him out of there as soon as possible and into a normal hospital. Speeding over to one of the staff members, I said, "I want to transfer my father to a different hospital." The woman nodded and quickly searched her computer to complete the process, but to my devastation, she shook her head. "I'm sorry, but the only one who can authorize this transfer is William Anderson. If you want to transfer your father, you're going to need Mr. Anderson's permission."

My jaw dropped in disbelief. I was being denied my right to my father yet again, and all because of William's selfishness. Fury enveloped me, and I decided that desperate times called for desperate measures.

I didn't hesitate for even a second when I punched 911 into my phone. When the woman on the other end answered, I spoke with confidence and a voice trembling with anger.

"Hello, I'd like to report a crime. My father is being illegally imprisoned by William Anderson. Please help me.'
