Billionaire's Betrayal: My Ex Beg Me To Love Him Again -
Chapter 0057
Chapter 0057
William's POV:
When I was told that Thomas West had nearly died under my care, I felt an anger rise from my sunken stomach. Who would dare do it on my own grounds? Did they even know who I was? No one dared to cross me and got away with it.
I had no choice but to punish my assistant. He obviously failed to choose the right people to watch Caroline's vegetative father, and I abhorred such grand mistakes. Sloppy work like that didn't deserve to be rewarded, so I dropped the bonus I was planning on giving James at the end of the month.
Following that note to myself, I called the sanatorium with my hands clenched in frustration. The moment someone picked up, I demanded, "There better be a good explanation for what happened."
The worker on the other end fumbled and stuttered his answer. "We're deeply sorry, sir. The surveillance system we used seems to have been hacked into. We can't get a clear picture of the culprit's face."
A growl in frustration slipped between clenched teeth. Why were all my hires turning out to be so useless? "Hire someone to recover the data," I ordered. "I don't care where you get them from. Just make sure they get the job done, or else you and everyone connected to this fiasco can kiss your jobs goodbye. Got it?"
The man on the other end swallowed thickly. "Yes sir."
I hung up, but I wasn't granted respite for very long. Seconds later, Caroline had called me, and boy, did she sound angry. She blatantly accused me of having a hand in her father's attempted murder.
Her baseless accusation struck a chord within me and I lost my temper with her. Did she even know how much I'd spent on keeping that old man alive? How could she seriously doubt me? I furiously hung up on her and went back home without a second thought.
Later that day while I was in my study, leisurely sorting files, my keen hearing picked up a noise coming from outside, sounding much like a knock at the front door. Probably a solicitor, I figured, and swiftly ignored it. Normally the maid would answer the door, but Sophia had ignorantly fired them. Whoever it was could come back later instead of wasting my time.
A loud bang rang out through my villa like a shotgun blast. I leapt up to investigate it, but stumbled backwards when a couple police officers forced their way through the door. They both glared at me with expressions firm with disapproval. "William Anderson?" one spoke. I struggled to answer, as I was too taken aback by the police breaking into my home. "Yes?"
"You've been accused of the unlawful imprisonment of Thomas West. We're going to have to

ask you to come with us and cooperate with our livestigation."
A wave of fury overcaine me, but for my own sake, I didn't voice it. I had no doubt in my mind that it was Caroline who had been my accuser. Asuch as I didn't want to indulge another one of her silly games, I couldn't just refuse the police. So, I reluctantly complied and went down to the station, where I had to give a short statement.
As the stern officers led me into the room to give my statement, I spotted Caroline's thin figure from afar, She glared at me with nothing but hatred, as though I was her worst enemy. I tried to return her glare, but I couldn't match her intensity, so I angrily looked away and followed the officers into the next room,
I gave my statement and impatiently waited as the two officers hushedly discussed the information from afar. When one returned to me, I eagerly asked, "Can I return home now?"
He curtly shook his head, disapproval on his brow. "Afraid not," he said simply. "We're going to have to hold you for another day or so while we get the investigation under wraps."
My lips parted in shock. "So I've been arrested?" nearly shouted, "That's not fair! The media can't know about this."
The officer held up a hand to calm me down, and begrudgingly slumped back in my seat. Well, Caroline is willing to drop the charges so long as you agree to her terms and give her custody of her father again."

I clenched my teeth so hard.they nearly shattered. As much as I hated complying with her demands, it would be humiliating if the media caught wind that I spent an entire day in jail. So, I complied and signed the stupid form, allowing Caroline to do as she wished with her father.
As I was exiting, I saw Caroline stiffly standing nearby, her face utterly blank. I threw her a glare, but she remained starkly calm. "Where's Sophia these days?" she asked.
I was startled by the question. Why was she asking about Sophia? "What's it to you?" I asked. Are you trying to frame her?"
Caroline didn't react to the admittedly baseless accusation, merely giving me a scrutinizing look. "Are you sure she would never betray you, William? Do you even know what happened to her in the years she was gone?"
An answer failed to make itself known. The truth was that I didn't truly know, for Sophia was always too distraught to discuss it. I swiftly distracted myself with the anger I felt at Caroline for trying to sow doubt between me and my darling Sophia.
"Don't try to drive a wedge between us," I told her, my voice tense. "I'm done with your games." Without another word, I.marched out.
As I was angrily driving back to my villa, I received a photo from my secretary. It was one of Sophia, appearing happy and with a smile on her face that beamed like the sun. I couldn't help but think back to Caroline's words.
