Chapter 0076

Caroline's POV:

"What? I would never!" I nearly shouted, forced to keep my voice down so George wouldn't stir. "You can't possibly think I had something to do with this!"

Instead of answering, the nanny quickly came forward to take George out of my arms. For George's sake, I didn't protest, but I was deeply hurt by the heavy look of suspicion and anger resting on her face. The doubt in both her and William's faces were beyond clear. I was stunned by their disbelief, barely able to muster a word to defend myself. Did I really look so cruel as to poison a little baby? Even if I did want to hurt George, why would I wait until now? I had a plethora of opportunities to do so in the past!

"William, do you really think I did it?" I asked him, locking my eyes with his. Honestly, I just wanted to see if his answer was as ridiculous as all the ones preceding it.

Upon being put on the spot so suddenly, William hesitated to give an answer. "No, I just... I have no idea." He withered under my frank look, lacking all self-confidence in his answer. Could I really be surprised anymore?

William let out a heavy sigh, ushering the doctor out of the villa before answering me. "I saw you make George his milk," he replied simply. "You're the only one who's touched it, and his last batch was perfectly fine. I just need to know if you know anything about it." My answer was firm and uncompromising. "No, William, I didn't. You said I was the only one who touched it. How could I hurt him in such a stupid way?"

He held my hard gaze for a long, silent moment before he inevitably looked away. "Listen, I'm sorry," he said at last. "I didn't mean to doubt you.

The sudden apology took me by surprise. When was the last time he had apologized to me? I couldn't even recall, for every time something went terribly wrong, he had always found a way to callously blame me. Normally I would have been grateful for such an apology, but now I could only muster up a bitter smile at the fact that he even had the gall to doubt me in the first place. I was never truly trusted by this family, was I?

"I don't want George to be hurt more than anyone else, William," I stated, trying not to let my voice turn hard with bitterness. If I lost my composure now, it would only lead to them. jumping to suspicion all over again.

"I understand where you're coming from," I continued, my voice wavering with emotion." George's life was exchanged for the life of my son, so I shouldn't like him, right? But George is an infant, William." A crack in my voice appeared as I regained my bearings. "I can't punish a child for the sins of his parents."

William's face was unreadable, but in the depths of his eyes, I could read a hint of remorse.

Caroline..." he began, speaking to me as if I actually meant something to him. It made me. want to step back in disgust that he thought he could play such games with me. Someone who truly cared for another didn't doubt them when it came to matters this serious. "I know the death of our baby has hurt you.

"That's one way to put it," I laughed humorlessly. Daniel's death was a thorn embedded deep in my heart. Every day without him was a day where I wondered if worth continuing on.

A tired sigh left William. "I know you're hurt, and so am I. But George-

The front door burst open and a familiar voice cut through the air. "Oh, George! It's okay! Mommy's here!"

Sophia rushed inside the villa, anger carved into her face. She practically yanked George from the nanny's arms, jolting George and causing him to stir with a whine. The fury in her eyes was unmistakable as she turned her gaze on me. How dare you?" she spat, her voice only waking George further and causing him to cry. "You're a sick woman! You hurt my baby!"

She burst into tears, sobbing and grieving pathetically over her baby in front of all of us. She turned her tear-streaked face towards William and pointed a wicked finger at me. "Get her out of here! She's evil and hurt our baby! I want her gone!"

Her screaming was causing George to grow more and more restless and bothered. He began to whine and cry, drawing the attention of the nanny trying to comfort her.

"Oh, madam, please don't be so angry," she pleaded, desperately trying to console the baby in the mother's arms. "You're scaring George!"

She and Sophia began to console the sobbing baby, as if only now remembering his existence. William looked between the three of us, looking at a loss for what to do. It was all so ridiculous, but underneath the chaos, I couldn't help but find something strange. "Sophia..." I started, catching the crying woman's attention. I was hardly phased by her withering glare. "You got here really fast. How did you know that George was in trouble?"
