Caroline's POV:

My heart was akin to a drum in my chest, pounding away in my ears as I dreaded the thought of being caught. Although I was hidden behind a rather large tree, it wouldn't be long until they eventually found me.

What would happen if they discovered me? Sophia was already a ruthless woman who was willing to get me killed just to do away with me. Who knew how far she would go just to shut me up?

My brain worked a mile a minute, desperately searching for any possible way for me to get out of this situation, but every road led to me being caught. Should I just make a run for it?

"I think someone is eavesdropping on us," Sophia growled, poison dripping from every word. "Sandra, go check it out. Now!"

My eyes widened and my heart beat faster as the crunch of dry leaves grew ever closer, a signal that these two scheming women were about to find me.

I tried to estimate my chances of having a real conflict with them if I was discovered, and they did not look good. My body was already weak and frail from chemotherapy. There was no possible way I could take on two women at once.

Perhaps they would just let me go? That was the hopeful thought, but Sophia's track record with deception and desperate attempts to get rid of me was not to be ignored.

We were out in the middle of the forest, after all, far away from the villa. William was nowhere in sight, and I doubted anyone would hear me if I screamed. It was the perfect place to commit a crime.

My only choice was to make a run for it, but could I even get very far with my wounded ankle?

Just before I could start, my stomach lurched with pain and I had to bite my lip hard to keep from crying out. My stomach cancer was once again coming back to haunt me. This really wasn't the time! Tears brimmed in my eyes as I fought not to make a sound, a cold sweat breaking out on my forehead.

I could hear the crunch of leaves now just a mere few feet away. Before long, they would find me and do whatever they could to shut me up. I was too weak to even run! If they found me, I was doomed.

Then, without warning, Sophia let out a shout of pain. "Ow!" she screamed, stumbling away from the tree. I heard the yowl of a cat and the sound of tiny paws hitting the grass below. I had to keep myself from crying in relief. A cat had hopped down from the tree, unknowingly saving my life!

Sandra gasped and went to help Sophia. "Be careful, madam!" she fretted, her voice growing a bit more distant and she carefully helped her employer away from the tree and the cat. "That's a feral cat!"

"Yes, I can see that, Sandra!" Sophia scolded, acting as though the nanny were an idiot. "Fucking cat! Damn it, that hurts!"

A smirk came to my lips at the

small, if insignificant win. As those small paws quickly scampered off, I couldn't help but mentally thank it for getting a good hit in on Sophia for me.

"Do you want me to go back to the villa and get some bandages? You're bleeding a bit," Sandra offered. Sophia scoffed, annoyance thick in her voice. "No, I'll be fine. Do you remember everything I told you?" "Yes, madam," replied the nanny.

The mistress' voice grew thick with anger. "Address me properly."

I could almost hear Sandra wince in response. "My apologies! Yes, Mrs. Anderson."

"Good. Now get out of here. I don't want to see you until the job is done!"

With that, the two separated, both of them going in opposite directions. Relief filled me as soon as they were both gone. Now I needed to get back to the evilla illa faster than the nanny

carrying out Sophia's nefarious plan.

I ran as fast as I could, trying to get to the villa just in the nick of time. Unfortunately, my bad ankle was put under too much stress and gave out underneath me.

stand due to my weak body and injured ankle. As I slowly got up, could barely even stand due to the state of my ankle, which throbbed in agony. It took me a while, but I finally made my way back to the villa.

"William? George?" I called out into the villa, but I got to response whatsoever. The home appeared quiet and empty, a fact that had a cold sweat accumulating on my forehead.

I rushed over to George's room and looked inside his crib, my heart sank when I realized the crib was completely empty. Was I too late?
