Caroline's POV:

Bursting into George's room, I found myself face to face with the new nanny, standing by little George's crib.

Just before I could yell at her to get away, she raised a thin finger to her lips, hushing me. Her hand ran over George's head, who was sound asleep in her arms, no doubt having happy dreams as he lay completely ignorant of the danger around him. "Is there something wrong, madam?" The new nanny gave me a curious, scrutinizing look.

I felt the urge to grab George and take him away from this sketchy woman, but I got a hold of myself before I could act rashly. I stamped down my temper, not wanting to lash out and alert the enemy that I was onto her. Especially when she already had the baby in her

arms.

It was also important that I verify that this woman really did have cruel intentions. I couldn't just point the finger at some poor worker who didn't deserve it. I forced a small smile on my face as I spoke to her.

"It's nothing," I said at last, keeping the alarm out of my voice. "I just heard there was a new nanny and wanted to make sure George was doing alright."

The new nanny gave me an odd look, almost as though she were evaluating me, but she said nothing in the end. As she was putting George in his crib, I inspected every little detail of this potentially dangerous woman.

She was much younger than Sandra, but she had a noticeably cold demeanor. It was as if people never smiled where she came from. I needed to know more about her if I wanted to keep a close eye on her.

"I'm Caroline," I introduced as soon as she turned back to me. "You are?"

"Laura," the nanny replied simply, looking at me almost as carefully as I was looking at her. Apparently I wasn't the only paranoid one around here.

"How many years have you worked, Laura?" I inquired, tracing her every movement as she went to pick up some of George's toys.

"A decade." Her replies were always cold and curt, as though I were bothering her just by asking questions. "Taking care of little ones is my specialty."

"Oh, that must be why Gerald was so ready to hand George off to you," I guessed, attempting to appear friendly on the surface.

Laura's gaze never waned in its suspicion, but she did appear to grow agitated by my presence. "Yes, I'm sure Mr. William will be more than pleased to see my credentials in child care. Now... is there anything else I can do for you?"

I couldn't leave this potentially dangerous woman here alone with George, so thinking fast, I made a clever excuse for her to leave. She was a threat to both George's security and mine. George would be far safer in my hands. "Yes, actually. Mr. William would like you to help clean out the garage."

Laura's face instinctually scrunched up with displeasure. "He said that to you?"

"I'm just the messenger," I replied, my nerves easing as I saw her step away from George. "I'll take care of him while you're cleaning, alright?"

This was a ruse, and it seemed like Laura knew that full well. She kept her mouth shut, however, and simply bowed her head and brushed past me to walk out of the room.

Now with a little more room to breathe, I pulled up a quaint little rocking chair and sat at George's side. Sitting down and letting out a slow and tired breath, I glanced over at George's sleeping form and smiled. "Don't worry, George," I murmured softly. "I'll keep you safe."

I vigilantly stayed in George's bedroom all day, only moving to gently coddle the infant whenever he woke up When night finally fell and my eyes grew tired, William finally entered with a tired sigh. Noticing me by George's crib, he lit up in curiosity and confusion. "Caroline?"

"Hey, William," I greeted, struggling not to let my own exhaustion show. "I heard about Sandra. How is she?"

Frustration flitted across the

billionaire's face. "She was stabbed by a creditor," he replied gravely. "Apparently she owes quite a sum of money she was using to pay for her husband's medical expenses. decided to pay a large chunk of the debt myself. She's been quite the

contribution to this family after all."

I was unable to stop the grimace that made its way onto my face. "Are you sure, William?" I asked before he could start singing her praises. "Are you sure she had no evil intentions?"

I received an odd, cautious, yet intrigued look from William. "What's that supposed to mean?"

It was time that William finally knew the unfortunate truth. The question was: would he even believe me?

"Listen, William, she is a dangerous woman," I told him outright. To his credit, he actually seemed to be listening to me rather intently. "You'll never believe what she's done to your own son; what Sophia has done to your own son." "Sophia?" he asked, sounding bewildered, but not denying anything yet. Perhaps there really was hope that he would be reasonable.

"Yes, Sophia," I replied hurriedly. "When I was outside, I found them—"

"Excuse me, Sir, I found something strange while cleaning your bedroom," Laura announced, entering in with something in her hands. It was the milk powder tin! How did she find that?

William noticed the tin as well and looked between us with profound confusion. "What is that?"

"An empty milk powder tin," Laura hummed, before looking me directly in the eye with a spark of mischief in her gaze. "Do you know anything about this, madam?"

My lips parted in shock. Was she attempting to frame me?
