Caroline's POV:

In an instant, the situation had been reversed, and now I was on the defensive. With the barest traces of a smirk making its way onto the nanny's lips, I knew she thought she had me trapped. Little did she know I wasn't going down without a fight. With little way to defend

myself, however, the odds were looking grim.

William's look was tinged with suspicion as he shifted his gaze from the milk tin over to me. "Caroline, why did she find the milk tin in our bedroom?"

Backed into a corner, I had no choice but to tell the truth and hope that William was sensible enough to take my side. "It was buried in the garden!" I tried to explain.

"And yet there isn't a speck of dirt on it," Laura replied, looking over it with a scrutinizing gaze. She must have expertly wiped it clean.

"I'm serious!" I continued, fighting past her interruption. "Sandra buried it to hide her crime. She poisoned George."

Laura made a noise of disgust. "Of course you're blaming her! She's not even here to defend herself."

My cheeks burned with anger at this woman's continued antagonizing. "Sandra did it at the direction of Sophia!"

William's expression remained hardened, but traces of shock lingered in his eyes. "Sophia?"

This would undoubtedly be the hardest piece of the puzzle to get William to believe, but I trudged on, trying to get him to understand that he was being manipulated.

"Yes, Sophia. She's trying to get me out of the picture and trying to get you to love her again."

"By poisoning her own baby?" Laura asked, laughing with incredulity. "Do you know how insane you sound right now?"

I wanted to yell at her to shut her mouth, but William quickly held up a hand to stop our bickering. His face was burning with embarrassment, and while his mouth was open to air his opinions, nothing came out.

Finally, he gave me a firm, but not antagonizing look. "Listen, Caroline, I know you care about George, but... I think you need to stay away from him. At least for the time being. I'm going to let Laura here take care of him in the meantime."

The thought of George being in the hands of this wicked woman had tears springing into my eyes. "You're doubting me?" I rasped, trying to keep myself from shaking.

My ex-husband adamantly shook his head. "I'm not saying that. I just... need to be sure. We can discuss it in the morning, but right now, it's late and we should sleep." "But Laura-!" I cried in protest.

William gently hushed me, as though he were trying to reassure me. It was as if he actually cared about my feelings, but that couldn't be true, right? "George will be fine, alright? I have cameras, so if the nanny tries to do anything, I'll see it right away. Won't I?"

I helplessly looked between William and Laura, who hardly tried to suppress the growing smirk on her face. Unfortunately, I had no power here, and so I could only lower my head and nod. Without another word, I morosely headed back to the master bedroom.

I got into bed, not speaking a word

to William as he came into the room,

got changed and slipped under the

blankets as well. He tried to say something to me, perhaps something tender and calming but I wasn't hearing it. My mind was racing with thoughts of all the things that could happen with little George while he was in Laura's clutches.

Soon enough, the lights flicked off and I was cast into darkness. As William fell into a deep slumber and the hours passed by, I found that just couldn't sleep with my fears plaguing my mind. So, upon making sure that William was dead asleep, I quietly snuck out of the room to check on George.

When I entered George's room, I found the room completely empty and the crib overturned. Confusion and panic fluttered in my mind as I looked around for George, but it wasn't until I looked outside that I found him. Carrying a baby-shaped bundle off into the night was Laura, heading straight for a car I didn't recognize. She was kidnapping him!

I couldn't waste a single second on waking William, so I sprinted down the stairs and outside as quickly as I could, nearly stumbling over my wounded ankle. When finally I made it outside, I saw Laura speaking to a driver with a grim face.

My eyes grew wide in horror as I saw her begin to hand the baby over, and without a second thought, I threw myself into the situation.

"Stop!" I yelled at the top of my

lungs. Both Laura and the driver

jumped and looked over at me, with

Laura's gaze being tinged with anger and indignance. I marched up Laura without fear in my heart. All I wanted was this baby to be safe. "Pm not letting you take George away!"

Laura rolled her eyes at me. "Don't try to be some hero, Caroline!"

George stirred in her arms, beginning to cry and wail as the argument grew loud. His ear-piercing cries were causing quite a racket, and it wouldn't be long until others heard.

"You'll have that baby over my dead body. Now give him to me or else I'll wake this whole villa!" I demanded.

The driver swore and grabbed something from his back pocket. "You three are going to wake everyone up! I refuse to get caught. She's coming with us!"

Before I could even process his alarming words, something struck me on the back of the head. I barely even had the chance to cry out as I fell to the ground, fading in and out of consciousness. All I could hear was George's screams and the hushed talking of Laura and the driver.

I was hauled into the car without ceremony and witnessed George be handed off to the driver. My mind was flooded with panic, but I could feel myself slipping into unconsciousness.

With my fading vision, I noticed Laura walking casually away from the car and back into the villa. What was she planning to do next?

I couldn't think about it for much longer, because that was when I finally blacked out.
