William's POV:

I was steadily awoken by an odd noise outside my bedroom. Ignoring it, I reached over to touch Caroline, only to find the spot where she once lay completely empty.

That woke me up in an instant, and soon I was sitting up straight in my bed and staring at the empty space. "Caroline?" I called out, hoping she was just in the bathroom, but I got no reply.

Did she try to leave the villa? No, why would she? Perhaps she was just worried about George and snuck out to make sure he was safe and sound.

I was agitated by the prospect of her visiting George when I explicitly told her not to, but I couldn't be too angry. Caroline seemed to genuinely care for George, and seeing her care for my son warmed my heart in a way I couldn't quite describe. Stepping out of bed and trudging over to George's room, I curiously noticed that the light was on. So Caroline really had snuck out to see George, hadn't she? With a tired sigh, I walked in to confront her and catch her red-handed.

"Caroline, didn't I tell you that Laura would look after-?" Upon stepping inside, I was startled to notice George's crib thrown to the floor and without George or Caroline in sight. Laura also wasn't there, and soon a feeling of unease was crawling down my back. Surely it wasn't true what Laura had accused Caroline of. Caroline wouldn't actually hurt George, would she?

Although I wanted to believe that my son was perfectly safe and that this was all some big misunderstanding, I let my panic get the better of me. Rushing to my room, I pressed the security alarm, calling all my hired attendants to the living room. Venturing down to the living room, I took a look at the lot of them and noticed that Laura was strangely absent. "Has anyone seen Caroline, Laura, or my son?" A stark silence filled the room and heads were shaken.

I felt an anger climb up my chest, and I fought to suppress it. I had Gerald fetch me a glass of water to help calm me down. "I see. And who was in charge of the night watch tonight?" I demanded.

One of the security guards I hired spoke up with a stutter. "It was me, sir," he confessed, a distinct tremble in his voice.

I glared at him harshly as I could barely tamper down my anger. I snatched the glass from Gerald, saying to the guard, "And you didn't see anyone leave the villa? What am I paying you for if you aren't even doing your job?"

The guard looked just about ready to break into a cold sweat. "I'm so sorry, sir," he apologized profusely. "I accidentally fell asleep!"

I swore and threw down the glass in my hand, where it shattered on the spot. "Are you serious? I need everyone to go find my son and Caroline! And look for Laura while you're at it. I need to find out why she wasn't guarding my son!"

My employees quickly dispersed,

leaving me with Gerald, who

endeavored to calm my frayed nerves. "Don't worry, Mr. William," he encouraged firmly. “We're going to find them, and I'm sure little George will be returned to you safe from

harm."

His comforting words meant little to me as my mind continued to race a mile a minute. My son was gone! Where could Caroline have taken him? Surely this was all just some misunderstanding, right? "What about the surveillance footage?" I suddenly demanded, giving Gerald a hard look. "Surely they must have caught something!"

Gerald hesitated to answer, no doubt because he knew my reaction wouldn't be pleasant. "Please forgive me, sir," he began with a voice full of apology, causing my heart to drop to my stomach. "There was a circuit failure this afternoon, and we temporarily shut down the cameras for maintenance. They've been

turned off all night."

My annoyance was at its peak. Why was everything always going wrong? I paid to make sure everything was taken care of for me, so why were there so many cracks in the wall?

"Mr. William!"

A cry came from the front door. It was Laura, staggering in both out of breath and looking frazzled. In her hand was a hairpin, and a familiar one at that.

"Laura, what happened?" I demanded, fearing the worst.

"Sir, Miss Caroline has run off with George!" Laura informed me with a level of distress.

My face twisted in shock and I couldn't believe my ears. "What? Give me that!"

I took the hairpin from her; and just as I'd thought, it was the same one Caroline had in her hair when she settled in to sleep. I couldn't stop myself from falling into deep

thought. Would Caroline reall

anything to hurt George? Did she

just want George all to herself? She obviously liked him very much, so why...?
