Thank you for buying the ingredients even though it’s so cold outside.”

“No worries,” Lila said while waving her hand once.

Rachel looked past her and was shocked to see Joey.

“Weren’t you upstairs? When did you come down?”

“Just now.

I thought Lila would be back soon, so I went out to wait for her.

I called you before I left the house.

Didn’t you hear me?”

Brows knitting together in confusion, Rachel tried to recall when such a thing happened.

However, she could not remember when Joey called her.

Was it because she was too immersed in cutting fruit? How come she had been so occupied that she did not even hear his voice?

“Miss Bennet, Joey was waiting for me at the gate.

I was surprised when I saw him, especially when I noticed his wet hair,” Lila informed.

Rachel hummed before shrugging her shoulders.

Joey approached the table and picked a grape from its stem.

He tiptoed and stuffed it into Rachel’s mouth.

“Let me dry your hair.”

“Next time, don’t go out with wet hair.

What if you catch a cold?”

“I won’t do it again,” Joey replied softly, fluttering his lashes.

In his mind, Hector’s words kept echoing.

After dinner, Joey suddenly climbed on Rachel’s Lap and snuggled into her arms, yawning.

Rachel scrunched her brows together.

Placing a hand on the child’s forehead to check his temperature, she asked, “What’s wrong?”

“I’m sleepy,” Joey muttered, his voice muffled as he buried his head in his mother’s arms.

From his forehead, Rachel rested her hand on top of his head and glanced at the clock on the wall.

“It’s only six o’clock.

Also, didn’t you just wake up?” Why are you sleepy again? Do you feel sick?

Joey shook his head in response.

Rachel let him rest in her arms for a while before deciding to carry him to his room, She gently laid him on the bed.

“Sleep for a while, but don’t sleep for too long, or else you’ll have trouble sleeping at night.”

The boy nodded.

When Rachel turned around to leave, Joey reached for her hand and asked, “Mommy, can you stay with me?”
