Chapter 148

"Cold..." Amery whispered in a low voice. Her face was buried in the hard and freezing surface where she had been locked in. She couldn't feel her legs and her whole body had gone numb. She tried to blow hot air through her mouth to stabilize her body temperature but even that wasn't working. She was scared. She didn't want to die but it felt like her end was drawing much closer than she thought.

She had woken up not too long ago after being knocked out by Levi's girlfriend but still, she couldn't bring herself to move neither could she sit up straight so she just gave up and laid down still. Her bruises stung her badly and whatever Madeline had done to her was ten times worse than what she had ever suffered before. She knew just how powerful wolfsbane was and Madeline had not only used a bottle but had immersed her into an entire gallon of it.

It hurts. She was hurting and her wolf was hurting as well. She didn't know how to describe the pain but it had been prowling restlessly inside her for hours now. The more unstable it gets, the more tiring it makes her in return.

Was this the reason why Levi tried to kill her? Was it because she was always getting in the way like Madeline had said? Were they in cohorts together? Is that why he hasn't found her yet? Is he even looking? So many questions raced through her mind at that very moment.

She shouldn't have trusted him. Asher was right. Levi would never change until he buried her six feet under but this was the last straw. She would never forgive him for this. She would never forgive him for lying to her and using her in this manner. A stray tear slid down her cheeks as she couldn't stop blaming herself for giving in to his lies. He had used her and now, look where it landed her.

Amery had tried to reach out to Asher and Quincy. She had tried to link her thoughts with them like she did the last time she was in danger but she found it incredibly hard to do. Her whole brain was jumbled and she couldn't bring herself to think straight. The only thing she saw was flashes of that woman and that baby which made her all the more confused. Was this really how it was good to end for her? Would she really die here with no one coming back to rescue or at least reclaim her corpse?

"Water..." She requested even though she could barely hear herself. "I need water." She repeated for the second time and just then, she heard footsteps quickly approaching.

"Have you finally accepted that no one is coming for you?" Madeline spoke from outside the huge bars that sealed the cage. She was crouched to the ground in front of her. "I gave you enough time so that you can finally come to terms that you would die out here because no one is coming for you."

"Why?" Amery asked. Her eyes barely open. "Why do you w-want to kill me? I have done absolutely nothing to you so why are you doing this?"

"Because you're disrupting the balance of our realm. The sooner you die, the quicker everything falls into place." Madeline answered and stood up to her feet. "Don't worry. I'll make your death swift and painless, that I can assure you." She walked up to a small table and brought out different bottles from her Sahel that she came with. She played with the bottles, mixing each content with the other. She heated it a little and corked the lid open.

"Why don't you just kill me?" Amery challenged fiercely. "What's the point of this anyway."

"I don't believe in hurting people to achieve my goals. I always play my game smartly and swiftly." She answered. "Trust me, if I wanted to kill you with my bare hands, I would have done so a long time ago but I want you to die once and for all. There's no point to endless t*****e, is there?" She asked with a smirk playing on her lips.

"The wolfsbane on your body has already rendered you weak and incapable of moving yourself and after you drink this, you'll be gone for good." Madeline approached the cage and unlocked it before stepping inside. She held Amery by her hair and dragged her out despite her cries and plea for help.

Forcing her to sit, she tried to empty the contents into Amery's mouth. They fought with each other. Amery was well aware of what that bottle contained. She was one hundred per cent sure that it was the same substance that Levi had tried to poison her with earlier and she'll be damned before she let any Into her mouth. Asher had mentioned that it would kill her if she took it so she was willing to fight with the last strength in her before she let Madeline win.

"Why are you being so stubborn?" Madeline asked and slapped Amery across her face. She was slowly getting impatient now. She needed the b***h dead as soon as possible. She needed to do this for Levi if she was going to claim her spot next to him as his girlfriend which would only be possible if Amery died.

"Just let me go." Amery whimpered, scared that her strength was slowly failing her. She could feel her life force fading away slowly and the minute she gave in, Madeline would win.

"You're going to die Amery. One way or another so just give in and-" Madeline stopped talking when she heard footsteps and mutterings from outside the cave. She pushed Amery to the ground and made to escape but before she could do that, she came face to face with the three alpha princes.

She swallowed. Her eyes were a visible reflection of fear and complete restlessness. This wasn't exactly how she had planned this to go. How did they find her despite all the precautions she took so that they couldn't?

"Madeline?" Levi beckoned. His eyes could not believe what he saw in front of him. When he thought that Amery was kidnapped, she was the very last person he expected to be behind this.

"You?" He pointed at her while Amery tried to catch her breath. He started towards her but she was quick to hold Amery hostage with a knife placed at the seam line of her neck.

"If any of you comes any closer then I'll kill her right here and now." She threatened. They all stopped abruptly, none of them taking a single step. Levi was well aware of Madeline's power. He knew that she would go through it. She wasn't bluffing and he knew that much.

"Why did you do it? Answer me!" He yelled at her. The angry lines on his face show clearly. Levi could feel the smoke coming out of his ears. He had been betrayed in the cruellest way possible.

"Don't act like you're the saint here, Levi. You wanted this. We both wanted this." She accused. "If you didn't want her dead then why did you accept the potion from me in the first place?" She asked but he didn't respond.

"I'm only doing you a favour, Levi. I'm doing the one thing that you couldn't do so why try to stop me? She isn't supposed to live and you all know that."

"I swear on my life and the goddess that if you so much as touch another strand of hair on her head then I will tear you from limb to limb Madeline." He swore vehemently, not mincing words.

"He means it." Quincy chirps in. If it weren't already a tense situation then they would've found his words funny but then again, it was a potentially dangerous and serious situation. Their mate was on the verge of death at this point and nothing was funny. "Let her go, NOW!" He screamed at the top of his lungs.

"She's going to die sooner or later so why not do it now? Why wait?" She questioned. "You said it yourself that this was the only way to save yourself and your brothers so I'm not wrong in doing this Levi. I love you and I don't regret it. Not one little bit." She confessed.

Levi took steady steps towards her but Madeline noticed and pointed the knife at him. "I said to not take another step or she dies." She repeated with brazen eyes. "Don't test me, Levi. I'll kill her and I mean it."

"Listen, Maddy, let's talk this over like civilized predators that we are." Quincy offered while Asher and Levi stalked closer but she wasn't having any of it. When she realized that she had been surrounded, she slashed the knife on Amery's wrist to create a diversion. Seeing what had happened, they dived to get her but she pushed Amery towards them and made a narrow escape out of the cave. Levi rushes after her, his blood boiling but before he can catch up with her, she jumps off a nearby cliff into the water so he lets her be and joins his brothers back in the cave.

"Where is she? Did you get her?" Asher Inquired but he shook his head in pain and intense regret.

"She somehow managed to escape." He answered In a low voice.

He saw Amery in Asher's arms and was instantly consumed by guilt. It was all his fault and he couldn't help but blame himself more when he saw her entire body covered in bruises. Blood oozed out of her wrist where Madeline had wounded her and he could hear her tiny whimpers. She was barely awake and could barely move. His endless desire to hurt her had brought her into this mess. If he hadn't tried to kill her then none of this would've happened. She trusted him and he ended up breaking that trust. She would never forgive him for this.

"I swear on my life that if I come across that b***h, I'd do you a whole lot of favour by killing her myself," Asher swore angrily as he held on to Amery a little tighter. "What do we do now?" He proceeded to ask.

"You should take her back home to somewhere safe" He informed Asher. He could barely bring himself to look at her face. How could he after everything he had done to cause all this to happen to her? "I'll go back to camp and inform them that she's alright and safe."

With that being said, he walked out of the cave without looking back as he made his way back to camp with nothing but his thoughts and conflictions as they tried to suffocate him and swallow him whole.
