Her Revenge Contract -
Chapter 37
Katherine's
POV
I suddenly felt really stupid for calling Xavier.
Xavier was still the rival company, and even though he had access to most of our company documentation and reports, I wasn't prepared to share everything with him just yet. The silence between us became unnerving, and I ended up listening to Xavier's amused breathing.
He must be sitting with a smirk on his lips.
What was he thinking?
Was he thinking that I was losing my sh*t? Maybe he thinks I'm about to go crazy!
"Well, I don't really have anything to say, so I will hang up." I said, coughing awkwardly and feeling my cheeks burn out of embarrassment, and hung up.
"Oh, Goddess, what am I doing?" I whispered nervously to myself and sat back in my seat.
I shouldn't do things like that! I might just give Xavier ideas...
I sighed, frustrated, and my gaze moved out the window.
We had just entered the pack premises, and tall trees greeted us.
I sighed, crossed my arms, and suddenly felt miserable and depressed.
Why did the goddess not gift me a wolf?
Why did she punish me like that?
The driveway came into view, and I shook the depressing thoughts off.
John's car was standing in the driveway, as was his assistant's car. I didn't expect to find John home so early. Did something happen at home?
The driver stopped and opened the passenger door for me, then greeted me and went to park the car.
I started to walk to the front door, curious about what was happening.
The front door stood open as if someone had left it unlocked in a rush, and I slowly pushed the door open, listening.
When I couldn't hear anything out of place, I casually walked into the foyer and dropped my keys on the table.
My gaze fell on John's assistant, standing at his office door, looking extremely nervous.
He must have arrived moments before me and left the door open.
"Enter!" John growled from his office, angry.
"Mr. King!" the assistant's voice trembled with fear.
"Talk, and do it quickly; I have other business to attend to," John demanded.
I took a few steps closer and focused on the conversation. I didn't mean to eavesdrop; it was just luck that I was at the right place at the right time.
"This is the engagement invitation," John's assistant said, handing him a black envelope with gold writing.
John looked at the envelope, threw it aside, and then returned his gaze to his assistant.
"And?" He asked impatiently.
"This is the last reply from Black Umbrella Enterprises," the assistant said, handing John some papers.
"Mr. Black is willing to discuss the project after the engagement party. His secretary will advise us of the date."
The assistant took a deep breath before he continued, and worry crossed his eyes.
"Mr. Black also wants to know why you would want to do this project as it falls outside of our company specifications. He says he is willing to observe and then make a decision. John threw the paper aside. Anger radiated from him.
I wasn't sure which project the assistant was referring to, but by the looks of it, it seemed to be a very important one to John.
"Did you get what I asked you for?" John asked the assistant as soon as he controlled his temper.
"Yes," the assistant replied, handing John a new phone and a blue box.
I guess John is about to make up with Erika.
I turned on my heels and rushed up the stairs, knowing the assistant was about to leave, then made sure I was out of sight, looking down from above.
Seconds later, as predicted, the assistant rushed out of John's office.
John casually walked out of his office, walked out of the double doors toward the veranda, called his mate and daughter, then headed to the living room. Rose entered first, followed by Erika. "Come on," Rose urged, "your father wants to speak to us, and it sounds important and urgent!"
With a small smile tucked at the corners of my lips, everything seemed urgent to John these days.
I suddenly wondered why John had killed my family in the first place. Was it only because he wanted to be the Alpha of the pack and CEO of King Enterprises? Or is there something more sincere hiding behind all this sh*t? "Daughter," John called, breaking my thoughts, and my gaze snapped toward John meeting Erika at the living room door. He pulled her into an embrace.
Erika hesitated, startled at her father's actions. She was still upset at her father.
"I need to apologize," John said, taking Erika's hands in his and leading her to a seat.
"I was just upset at what happened at work, and I didn't have the right to scold you like that," John said, looking really guilty.
He gave Erika a small smile, hoping she would believe him. When she didn't say anything, he turned and grabbed the jewelry box from the side table.
"I have something for you," he said. "I hope you like it and will try and forgive me!"
John opened the box, revealing a diamond bracelet. It was beautiful.
Erika picked up the bracelet and held it in her hand.
"I promise you, I will find a way to get Xavier to propose to you. You just need to be ready when the time comes!"
Erika jumped to her feet, furious, and my eyes widened in shock.
"I don't believe you, father!" Erika roared angrily and threw the bracelet at him. "I want her dead now! I want to see her blood spilled all over the floor!" Erika lost control and swept everything from the side tables onto the floor.
Antique pieces are scattered into a million pieces.
John watched hopelessly as Erika rearranged the living room in one of her temper tantrums.
I have never seen Erika go this far, and I was surprised that John let her destroy whatever she got her hands on.
Erika grabbed a rare celadon vase and threw it against the wall, breaking it into a million odd pieces.
My eyes widened even more, knowing that the vase she just threw against the wall cost over a million dollars and was bought at an auction.
John's jaw was strained, yet he didn't do much except watch his daughter destroy precious artifacts.
"Erika!" Rose tried to stop her: "Your father has apologized; now control your temper!"
John fought back his anger. He knew this was his own doing.
"Erika, are you willful? Do you know that the celadon vase you just threw against the wall was bought at an auction? I was planning to have you give that vase to Xavier as a gift to help you get close to him!" Erika looked slightly dazed, but then she resumed her domineering appearance.
"So what!" She yelled, "I threw a million-dollar vase against the wall, and now it is broken! You can buy a new one!"
Erika's face was red out of anger and carried a hateful and murderous look.
"How did you think I would act after you scolded me like a small child? After you told me I would never be the heir of King Enterprises, because I am dumb?"
"You forced me to tolerate Kate! You force me to give her more! I had to give up my room for her; now I need to hear how she snogs Xavier in public!"
Erika balled her fists, panting.
"If you had listened to me and killed that b*tch the same day she came back, we wouldn't have had this problem!" she yelled.
"Hush!" Rose quickly covered Erika's mouth. "You can't talk like that; if any of that gets out by accident, all our previous efforts to keep it a secret will all be in vain."
"Now stop being so angry and calm down," John said and sighed. "I have already thought of a plan..."
"Come on," Rose said tenderly and wiped a stray hair from Erika's face, "your father has apologized; take the gift and see if you like it."
Erika sighed and walked to her father's side, and he held the bracelet out to her.
"Erika, isn't it beautiful?" Rose cooed, trying to lift the mood. "Should we see how it looks on your wrist?"
My gaze moved to the ring on my finger, and my heart suddenly warmed.
I didn't think much of the ring when I chose it, but when I looked at the certificate, I discovered that the ring's diamonds weighed over 5.5 carats, yet that wasn't what made my heart warm. If you turned the ring over, you could see a faint heart shape in the middle of the diamond...
