Chapter 42

Latina opened her eyes. It was dark. She felt the familiar emotion swelling inside her. Fear. Everything was black, no colors, no lights, it was fearsome and empty.

‘Where am I?’ she asked herself. She tried to speak but words wouldn’t come out, she could only think what she wished to say.

A freezing hot air touched her. It seeped through directly to her soul like she no longer had her flesh where she usually felt the pain first. The heat and the cold were inflicting her, simultaneously. It was painful, extremely painful. Latina wanted to cry in misery but then again, nothing came out of her mouth. She shifted her hands around, striving to grab something to hold on to. Sadly, there was none in nothingness.

The last thing she remembered was when they were heading to the village chief’s mansion. After that, she doesn’t recall anything.

‘Hmp! I always remind you what to do but you kept ignoring me!’

Latina’s eyes sparkled when she heard the familiar voice in her head. ‘Where are you? Show yourself, I need to see even a little light. I can’t breathe in this dark place,’ Latina responded. She waited for her subconscious to show up in its usual form hoping that its glow would loosen the tightening feeling in her chest.

‘I wish I could!’

‘Then? Can’t you appear for once? I’m going crazy. I can’t breathe, no, I don’t want to die yet!’ Latina shrieked inside her head. Her subconscious was startled that it fainted for a while. It scratched its head a few moments later while thinking about the best solution that could help the lady.

‘Aish, don’t scream like that. We’ll both die if you panic.’

The lady nodded her head as a response to her subconscious. She never really appreciated it before but now she was glad that she had it.

‘Good girl,’ her subconscious said. ‘Well, I have all the information you need. I could give all these to you but you might get a shock if you’ll have it all at the same time.’

‘What do you mean?’ Latina asked.

‘If you remember where you left your body, you can get out of this place and simply return to it. I’m only worried about one thing, to retrieve that information, you have to remember everything from the beginning and it will take some time. Also, you might find some memories that don’t belong to you.’

‘It doesn’t matter!’ the lady responded. If it means leaving the dark forsaken place, she will do everything. ‘I don’t want to stay here. I want to go back. I don’t care about the answers I need to find anymore. All I want is to get out of this place and be with Sebastian!’ Latina stopped thinking for a bit. Her chest got tighter, and she felt a sharp pain piercing the depths of her soul. ‘Sebastian…the name sounded so familiar…but who is he?’ she asked herself confused. She was sure that she knew the guy but when she thought about it, her memories were scrambled.

‘This is bad. We need to hurry!’ her subconscious wailed.

‘Um,’ Latina nodded.

‘I’m sorry but this is a bit painful.’ She heard her subconscious say before she wandered to a place where everything started.

Like a movie played in front of her, Latina saw the people she had long forgotten. She braced herself as she watched the scene. A familiar warmth wrapped her almost broken soul as the play went on.

“Brother!” A beautiful girl wearing a fancy dress was crying while running towards her elder brother who was reading a book under the shed of a huge tree.

The young man closed his book and opened his arms wide to welcome his younger sister. He couldn’t hide the smile on his lips despite the girl crying before him. “Hush, what happened?” he asked gently, stroking the girl’s hair who was snuggled on his chest, wiping her tears and snot. He doesn’t mind it all anyway if it was for his beloved sister, getting his shirt dirty was nothing compared to having her cry all day.

“Hmp! Mother said I should behave at tonight’s party. Brother, I don’t want to behave! Waaaah!” the girl whined. Her beautiful brown orbs were drowning in tears as she shook her head furiously, looking at her brother’s handsome face.

“Mm… Mother was right. There’s nothing wrong about behaving, especially in front of other people,” the young man said. He wiped her tears and smiled at her, “Stop crying, alright?”

“No!” The girl raised her voice and hugged her brother tightly. “She said I should behave so that I could find a suitable husband. Brother, I don’t want to marry anyone else except you.”

A sad smile was painted on the young man’s face. He said nothing but his eyes revealed the truth, even though he wanted to marry his sister.

Latina put a hand on her mouth, and couldn’t believe what she witnessed. She doesn’t remember those faces but her heart ached for their forbidden love. A loud cry caught Latina’s attention. She hugged herself as she continued to watch the next scene.

The rain was pouring heavily outside but the loud cry coming from inside the huge mansion could still be heard. The previously young girl grew up. Wearing a more lady-like dress and some accessories, her appearance was nothing compared to the young girl she was before, though she seemed to love crying a lot.

There were no people around other than her older brother who turned into a fine man. He has a nicer body too. His lips were sealed while comforting his sister with a hug. On top of the table ahead were urns of their parents’ ashes who were murdered. They hugged each other knowing that from then on, it will only be the two of them.

Latina unconsciously shed a tear. She understood the concept of a ‘parent’ but she couldn’t grasp the meaning of it.

‘Do you still want to continue?’ her subconscious confirmed.

‘Yes. Show me everything!’ Latina replied bravely. Somehow, she had this urge to continue. Something was telling her that everything will be fine after all these. Her tears dried out when the next scene was played.

It was the siblings, whispering sweet and comforting words to each other as they burned their naked bodies in the passionate flame and became one. They looked more mature than before. The man carefully kissed the woman underneath him. Happiness and guilt were both visible in their eyes.
