Melody’s POV

I could hardly believe what I just saw in the garden. Sickly creatures that took Riley and Kai’s form. Riley and Kai becoming so cold and deadly. Now Kai is out cold and Riley is not smiling like she normally would be. “I will answer any questions you have for me.” Riley said while looking around the room. “Ok first off Is Kai going to be alright, and what were those things out there?” Mama asked. “Kai will be fine, but he may recover faster if Ethan shares his energy with him.” EJ stepped forward and kneeled down on the floor next to Riley. “How can I do that?” He asked. Riley laid Kai’s head on EJ’s lap and opened his mouth a bit. “Now let some of your b***d flow into his mouth.” Riley told him. EJ nodded and raised his hand over Kai’s mouth. Squeezing his hands and letting his claws puncture his palm, b***d slowly dripped down from EJ’s hand into Kai’s mouth. Riley stroked her brother’s throat so that he would swallow the b***d, his color automatically looked better and he didn’t look so pained anymore. Riley grabbed EJ’s hand and healed his puncture wounds. “He will be fine now, just let him rest.” She said with a small smile as she stroked her brother’s hair.

“And to answer your other question… Those things out there are known as doppelganger demons, they can take the form of any creature by drinking a little bit of their b***d. Though there are limitations. Like if they were to take Luca’s place or Drake’s place… They could fake their human forms, but they can’t fake the animal form.” Riley answered. “Ok, not when did they switch with you and Kai?” Luca asked. “When I went to go get Kai. I wanted his take on them since I was feeling their presence a lot closer. Some demons are just curious about other creatures so they observe from a distance and mimic what they see, but they always maintain a distance. Since they were closer to Melody for my liking, I wanted to know if we should eliminate them or leave them be.” She paused and sighed. “When I got to Kai’s room, they had hit us with their miasma. Kai linked me telepathically that we should play along and see what they did.”

“Wait, I didn’t know you could mink link.” I interrupted. I was amazed at the fact, but curious on why they never said anything about it. “I guess it is sort of like your pack link. Back home we could only link with our family, or those that we create a strong bond with.” “How strong of a bond must there be?” TJ asked. “Complete trust in one another. Since Kai and I are not from this world, we would have to make the link with Melody first before we can link anyone else.” “Why?” Drake asked. “Because us being Melody’s guardians we would need to use the bond with her as a base to anchor our powers in this world, but Melody would have to accept and trust Kai and I as her guardians completely, then she could create the link with us… but her fear of us getting hurt clouds her trust in us.” “So what are you saying that I am not allowed to fear for your safety and all that?! You two may be guardians, but you are also children and I want you safe!! You two are like family to not only me but to all of us in the short time you have been here!” I snapped.

Riley then stood and looked me dead in the eyes. Her eyes were void of her normal happy spark. Then she raised her hand to show me her birthmark. “Our mother knew from the moment we were born that we would be chosen as someone’s guardians, she didn’t know when or where it would happen. So she trained us from a young age, but she gave us twice as much love as any parent would their child. You feel sad and sorry for us because we are ten years old and in charge of protecting you. Our mother had just gotten her ears and tail when she became a guardian and literally survived through prue hell. You can care for us like family, but you need to remember and accept the fact that it is OUR job to protect YOU, not the other way around! Just like it is your pack’s job to fight and protect you as their luna… That includes your brothers, your parents, your friends, and your mates… WHAT IN THE HELL MAKES KAI AND I SO DIFFERENT FROM ALL OF THAT, BESIDES THE FACT THAT WE ARE CHILDREN IN YOUR EYES!?” She yelled, shaking the room. I was taking a back. Riley actually yelled. Even during training she never so much as raised her voice.

“She does have a point there.” Jeremiah said. “What do you mean by that Jeremiah?” I asked in a harsh tone. “Don’t be upset just because you don’t like what you are hearing, Melody. The twins have told you over and over how things are for them and how they were raised and trained back in their world. Our world is sunshines and rainbows compared to the harsh environment of their birthplace.” He spoke in an even and calm tone. “You keep trying to treat them as if they are pups that you’ve just taken in, but they were born to protect you from some evil that we have no chance of facing alone. You try to shelter them when you should be trusting them with your heart and soul to do the job they were meant to do.” I was speechless. It was true that I hated how they put me before themselves, because I want them to be kids for once. I just want them to be safe and carefree.

‘That is the problem, Mel. We can not change who they truly are no matter what. They were born to protect and train you and our mates for something that is after us. Think of it this way… If you knew that Luca was our mate, but were told to let him go be with that b***h that tried to use him for power… could you do that?’ Artemis asked. ‘What of course not. I can’t sit by and watch someone wronging someone else. Especially someone close to me. That is not who I am.’ I said. ‘Then why are you trying to change the twins of who they truly are?’ She countered. Then it seemed to click in my mind. I was trying to change them. Even if I say I trust them, the twins and their beast can’t feel it because I try to keep them from everything that I fear would harm them. I take a deep breath. “I’m sorry Riley. I guess I was just seeing you for your age and nothing else. I do trust in you and Kai completely.”

As soon as I said that. Riley g*****d and covered her left eye. Kai stirred in his sleep, his hand going to his left eye as well. “What is going on?” TJ asked, a bit panicked. Then a mysterious blue fire appeared in the air. The blue fire turned into a small little silver fox with blue flames around it’s legs. Riley had her right eye still open and looked over at the little fox. “C-c-calcifer? What are you doing here?” She asked in a strained voice. Still gripping her left eye. “I will answer that in a moment, first this little idot needs to wake up.” The silver fox, Calcifer, said and jumped right onto Kai’s stomach. “Argh! What the hell?!” Kai g*****d as he woke up. He only opened his right eye. “Time to rise and shine, little guardian.” Calcifer said, while sitting on Kai’s chest. Kai shot up into a sitting position, causing the little silver fox to roll down his body, shocked and confused at seeing the little fox.

“Calcifer? What are you doing here? Is mother here?” Kai asked rapidly while looking around. Calcifer shook his head. “No she is not, and it is not my place to tell her where you two ran off to. That is something you will face when you meet with her again.” He said looking between the twins. Then he hopped up on the nearby desk. “I am here to help your familiars come forth.” He said. Then he started licking his front paw and rubbing it on his head like a cat cleaning itself. “Wait, but we only get our familiars when we become full guardians.” Kai said. “Yes, your mistress has finally given you her trust. Now your familiars are trying to come forth. You need to open your left eyes. It will be painful at first but try to open them.” Calcifer said.

Kai and Riley looked at me, then each other. “What are familiars?” I asked Calcifer. “They are a small creature that will help the twins with their divine powers, so they should not be so drained when they use them. Only full-fleg guardians can summon their familiars, but a beast human can only become a guardian when their master or mistress fully accepts and trusts them completely.” He said. I looked at the twins and they winced as they forced their left eyes open. Kai got his left eye opened and I saw a deep dark red outline of a tribal sun in his bright red eye. A small orb came out of his eye and floated into his palm. I looked over to Riley and she had gotten her left eye open as well. She had a dark blue crescent moon in her blue eye, and a similar orb came out of her eye and into her palm.

“Now you need a drop of your b***d, your mistress’s b***d, and a parent’s familiar.” Calcifer said, then he bit his paw and dropped a drop of b***d on each orb in the twin’s hand. They each bit their finger and dropped their own b***d on their orb. Without hesitation I bit down on my own finger and let a drop of my b***d drip onto each orb. As soon as my b***d hit them, they began to glow. Fire surrounded Kai’s orb while water swirled around Riley’s. The fire and water leaped out of their hands and into the air. The water formed into a half horse, half fish creature that seemed to float in the air. The fire turned into a beautiful bird with golden flames for feathers.

The horse thing nuzzled up to Riley while the fire bird perched itself on Kai’s shoulder. “Hello Kai, it is so wonderful to meet you. My name is Aiden, I’m a fire phoenix.” The brilliant golden bird spoke. “And I am Leah, I am a hippocampus. Though most creatures know me as a ‘seahorse’ or a kelpie.” The horse said in a pleasant soft voice. Then both creatures turned to me and bowed their heads. “It is very enchanting to meet you, your highness.” Aiden said, while stretching his in a polite formal bow. “Yes, it truly is a pleasure to meet you, M’lady.” Leah said while bowing her head down with her fishtail going to one side, like she was doing a curtsy.

I smiled. “It is wonderful to meet the two of you as well, but please drop the formalities. My name is Melody.” They both nodded. “If that is what you wish.” they spoke in unison. “Well my job here is done. Now Riley and Kai. I will let you know this. Your mother is searching everywhere for you. You should have at least left a note or something when you ran away.” Calcifer scolded the twins before he jumped into the air and started spinning around. He turned into a blue fireball and disappeared.
