Mating the Female Alpha -
Chapter 60 – This omega is capable of more than you know.
Bernice's POV
"I came to speak with you..."
My heart was heavy in my stomach as I remained at the top of the stairs, listening to Cora and Landry speaking in the foyer. There was a part of me that was hoping that he would dismiss her and that he would come upstairs with me. But he didn't.
He went into the living room with her to speak in private. I couldn't bring myself to go down the stairs and listen to the rest of their conversation. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and went to the bathroom and take a bath. I tried to brush the thought of Landry with Cora out of my mind, but I couldn't help it. I wondered what their relationship was. He had said they were old friends, but I couldn't help but think there was more than he was saying. Even Jessie seemed uneasy to see Cora. That had to be something else going on that I wasn't aware of.
I wanted to ask him when we returned to the palace, but I also knew that it wasn't my business.
I stripped off my clothing and stepped into the hot bath, feeling my muscles relax after a long day. I closed my eyes and leaned back, allowing the steam and clear my sinuses and warm my chilled body. I didn't want to think about Landry with that woman.
I wasn't sure what was coming over me all of a sudden. He had this effect on me that was driving me insane.
Cora was so beautiful; I almost didn't blame him for wanting to talk with her.
I finished my bath and drained the water. Once I dressed, I went to Landry's study. It's been almost 30 minutes since I started my bath. He had to have been done with his conversation by now. But I knocked on his study door, and there was no response. I opened the door slightly and peered inside; he wasn't there.
My heart felt heavy again.
Could he still be speaking with her?
"You know, if you told him how you felt, you wouldn't be in this position," my wolf purred.
I knew she was right; maybe I should speak with Landry about what might be feelings. Another knot formed in my stomach and a wave of nausea surfaced in my throat.
I swallowed it down.
Maybe he was in his room.
I went toward his room and knocked on his door; I waited a moment, but there was no answer. I couldn't help the groan that left my lips as I leaned against the wall.
What was wrong with me?
"Just go downstairs," Julia urged. "You know he's with her still. Interrupt them and tell him how you feel. Make her leave."
...
Landry's POV
Landry stands to his feet, staring around Cora's serious face.
She was staying in town for a while? What did that even mean? She had to have known that was a terrible idea; there was no way he would ever forgive her after what she had done to him.
"I need you to leave, Cora," he says to her, keeping his eyes locked on hers.
She doesn't look surprised by his words, and she doesn't look bothered.
"I understand you don't want to speak to me right now," she says, standing to her feet. "But I'm not going to give up this easily."
For once, Landry was at a loss for words.
This was the last thing Landry needed right now. He had way too much on his plate as is. He didn't need to be dealing with Cora.
"I advise that you do," Landry says coldly. "You aren't wanted here."
She clears her throat and turns away from her; as she walks, her hips sway. She was doing that on purpose to captivate him, but it wasn't working. Before she reaches the door, she pauses and turns back to him. "You know, if Jessie can find it in her heart to forgive me, I don't see why you can't."
"Jessie doesn't know what you did."
Her brows rose in surprise. She wasn't expecting that.
"You didn't tell her?"
"No."
"Why?" She asked, curiously.
"Because it's not her concern," Landry says in return.
A small smile plays on her lips and she takes a few steps closer to him; he remains his ground, staring at her as if she was nothing more than a stranger.
"You are still trying to protect me, aren't you? After all these years. You still protect me."
"That's not what I'm doing," Landry said, shaking his head slowly. "I won't ask again..."
"Landry, when are you going to face the music? Now that Tina is gone, you are going to need a Luna Queen. I'm not here because I want to be the luna queen, but do you really think that little omega you have is capable of being that queen?" She places a hand on his bicep, he remained unmoved.
"You need a queen that can take charge. Who isn't afraid to be in power...I admit Tina would have been perfect. But she's gone now..." she says, batting her lashes at him.
It was taking everything he had not to lose control and rip her head off right then and there.
"The omega isn't capable of that..."
"I assure you, Madam Cora, that this omega, is capable of a lot more than you know," a voice from the doorway says, firmly.
They both turn to see Bernice standing before them and a flood of relief washes over him. He fought to keep the smile off his lips.
"I don't doubt that..." Cora tried to explain.
"It sounds like you doubt that a lot," Bernice says, raising her brows. "It might be true that I don't know a thing about being a luna queen, but I'm very smart and incredibly strong. Alpha King Landry can see that and that's all that really matters. Is it not?"
She glances at Landry as she says that last part.
He grinned at her and nods to her question. Was she finally coming to terms with her feelings? Was she saying that she will be his luna queen after all? "Alpha!?" His beta opened a mindlink in his mind; Bernice also tensed, hearing the mindlink. "There's a bear attack! We need all hands on deck!"
Bernice's eyes widened at the sound of his beta and before Cora had the chance to respond, Landry shut her down.
"As fun as this was, Cora. I think you should be going now. I have some business elsewhere."
Cora presses her lips together in a firm line, but she doesn't protest. It was obvious that Bernice embarrassed her, which pleased Landry. He would have to tell Bernice the entire story at a different time; she deserved to know the truth, even if it didn't make him look like the strong and mighty Alpha King she has come to know.
Once Cora leaves, Landry rushes toward the front of the palace, not knowing that Bernice was following closely behind him. He pauses at the door before shifting into his wolf form.
"What are you doing?" He asks her, narrowing his eyes down at her.
"I'm coming with you," she says with finality in her tone. "There's no way I'm letting you do this by yourself." "Bernice..."
"Save the argument, Landry. We don't have the time for this."
She was right; they needed to leave.
He turns away and shifts into his wolf form, she shifts as well, and they run quickly through the palace grounds and leaped into the forest. They both ran at lightning speed; his dark fur and her white fur meshed. Both of which were illuminated in the moonlight.
When they neared, Landry could hear the battle going on before them. His men were fighting hard, but they were struggling without Bernice and Landry fighting by their side.
The bears were stronger than the wolves, but they were beginning to grow mightier than ever.
Bernice and Landry were still undefeatable.
But as they broke through the clearing to join the battle, Landry freezes when he saw who has joined the side of the bears and were attacking his warriors.
Bernice's voice sounded distant, though she was right beside him when she began to ask, "Is that...?"
"Tina's parents..."
