My Pretty Sweetheart (Arianna) -
Chapter 1823
Beep... beep...
And then the call was cut off. He didn't pick up the phone.
Hendrix had always been a light-sleeper and he seldom let his calls go to voicemail. Something must have happened to him.
I held the phone for a few seconds, then I clicked into WhatsApp and started a video call with Evan.
After a while, Evan answered the call. Behind him was a bright coloured wall.
"Madam Reid, what's the matter?" Evan asked as he stared into the camera in a daze.
"Where is Hendrix?" I demanded.
"Mr. Roberts didn't tell me anything," he blurted out without thinking twice.
"Is that so?" I muttered. His answer was hardly believable. As a personal assistant, Hendrix wouldn't keep Evan in the dark about his whereabouts, especially if he was in the office just a few moments ago. I continued, "Well, I'm not looking for Hendrix, I'm looking for you. Where are you? I'll come to you."
Evan thought for a few seconds and said calmly, "I think I'll go to you instead, Madam." "Okay, come to Hendrix's office. I'll give you twenty minutes," I ordered.
After that, there was nothing left for him to say, so he promptly ended the call.
Sitting on Hendrix's office chair, I let my thoughts run. I recalled the conversation I had with Hendrix and how his reactions were.
He was a person who knew how to control his own emotions. If a situation wasn't very serious, he would remain expressionless. As a patient, I understood how a person could lose control of their emotions when faced with illness. Then, all the real emotions would appear on their face for everyone to see.
Of course, this was merely my guess for the worst possible outcome. Maybe Hendrix had encountered something that was hard but not impossible to solve. I hoped it was the latter. After all, no matter what kind of loss I suffered, it wasn't as important as losing my life.
After waiting for nearly half an hour, Evan pushed through the doors and entered.
"I'm sorry, Madam Reid. I had just settled something, sorry to keep you waiting," he apologized and bowed respectfully.
I didn't reply but stared at him coldly. The room was silent for a long time. Finally I broke the silence, "You were with Hendrix just now." "I wasn't," Evan said as he kept his eyes on the ground, not daring to look at me, "Madam, please don't overthink things, I was late just now because I had to deal with some business
affairs."
I bit my lip and remained silent.
Hendrix had repeatedly informed Evan that he had to obey both Hendrix's and my orders. Evan had always taken this order to heart. Perhaps Evan was telling the truth but since he had kept me waiting for some time, it meant the matter that he went to settle was quite important and serious.
The room fell into an awkward silence again. I then demanded, "Well then, tell me what were you doing? There's no need to hide it from me, right, Evan?"
"Of course," Evan assured hurriedly.
He lifted his eyes and looked at me calmly. Then he spoke, "In order for Serene to successfully take over the deal for Bate Coin, Mr. Roberts made a secret guarantee when he was being interviewed. Now, the
company's business IS
the
supervision of the stock committee, and the authorities will send
someone over tomorrow to
investigate. Therefore, I have to
prepare everything by tonight.
Nothing was to be delayed."
Evan's explanation sounded reasonable and fair.
Looking at Evan's calm face, I started to wonder if I had indeed overthought things.
I had come to Hendrix's office due to
a sudden spark of anger, and Evan
amount
had rushed over in a hurry. It was impossible for Evan to plan such perfect reason in such a short ocea amount of time. Moreover, if what he had said was true, then such a huge investigation by the shareholders' committee would attract the media's attention. If he lied to me, he would be easily exposed the very next day.
