My Pretty Sweetheart (Arianna) -
Chapter 1926
"Well..." Wynn fretted as he looked at his dirty hands and pretended that he wasn't fit for the task. "My hands are dirty... She has to give it to you..."
Irvin, who had remained silent all this while, suddenly interjected, "Mr. Roberts, you have a close relationship with your son. It seems that you and your wife are on good terms as well." Hendrix's eyes flashed with a gloomy chill, and he responded with a sneer, "Well, you and Miss Reid's relationship seems quite ordinary."
Irvin remained calm, but added, "I didn't expect that you would have so much time and energy to manage the family affairs of others." Hendrix's face darkened and his eyes clouded over with rage. "I can't be compared with you who makes others' affairs your concern."
Irvin straightened his back immediately and said with a smile, "Mr. Roberts, you are so eloquent with your words."
"As you are," Hendrix retorted calmly, then turned to look at the child. There was not even the slightest waver in his tone, but his voice was very soft as he asked, "Have you had your fill?" Wynn had probably witnessed a lot of similar occasions. Noticing that something amiss with the atmosphere, he reluctantly put down the cutlery in his hands and replied, "Yes."
"Let's go. I'm afraid we'd upset someone if we stay any longer," Hendrix said as he got up. He took
Wynn's tiny hand and said his goodbyes politely, "Thank you for your hospitality."
After the both of them left, I asked Irvin, "Do you have a grudge against Hendrix?"
The last time they met, the two of them had been rather harmonious. However, their relationship tensed when they started living across one another as neighbors.
It was just a meal. They did not have to be so sharp-tongued.
The most important thing to note was that Irvin, who was always gentle and courteous, was angered just then. How unusual.
Upon hearing that, Irvin returned to his humble self and assured me with a faint smile, "That's not true. You think too much. Let's continue eating."
He obviously did not want to continue talking about this.
This just proved that there was an irreconcilable past between him and Hendrix.
After all, we weren't like most
engaged couples. If Irvin didn't take
the initiative to talk about it, I
wouldn't have a reason to ask about it either.
From the corner of my eye, I noticed that Wynn's food was untouched.
Hendrix said that they could not cook in their new house, and the little fellow did not eat takeout. He would certainly be hungry.
"Perhaps I could whip something up and send it over to them later?" I thought to myself.
But that wasn't a good idea as it would probably upset Irvin even more. Even if he didn't verbalize it, he would definitely be agitated on the inside.
It served as another reason as to why I should not confront him.
"You can't eat any more?" Irvin asked, his voice interrupting my thoughts.
"Yes, I'm full. I'll head up to my room first," I said to him.
After that, I picked up my phone and turned to go upstairs, pretending to go about my nightly routine.
Irvin may have noticed, but if he did, he said nothing about it.
I closed the door and made sure that Irvin was not following me. Then, unlocked my phone, tapped onto the food delivery service and chose a personal home cuisine.
Wynn did not have to go hungry that night.
The next day, I went out for a walk as usual and happened to bump into Hendrix and Wynn, both ready to leave their house.
Wynn was extremely excited when he saw me. "Madam Pretty!" He gushed.
"Good morning, Wynn," I greeted him with a smile and glanced at Hendrix, only to find that Hendrix's black eyes were fixed on me.
I froze for a moment before I regained my composure and greeted the man, "Good morning, Mr. Roberts."
"Good morning," Hendrix replied while nodding his head indifferently. Then, he led Wynn into the black commercial vehicle.
