Gretha’s POV

I am going to the Kingdom, and told Andrew I was returning to spy. I told him I would bring proof that we could not beat the Kingdom’s wolves and that I would meet him at the river, bonding the Kingdom in a few days. I will link him when I am ready. He needs to come alone when I link him, as I do not want Morgan to think we are p*****s and are scared. I know that Andrew is buying my story. I want to go to Miriam and ask her to meet us there. She can bring as many wolves and magical creatures as she likes to protect her against Andrew and me. I am back in the Kingdom before long and looking for Miriam. I hope she still remembers me from our childhood. If she does not recognize me and I am a spy, she might kill me, as I do not have proof of who I am. I know my pack prays to the dark gods, but I refuse! I only pray to the Moon Goddess and hope she is not mad at me for staying with the pack. I pray that my mission will be successful and that she will help me save my pack. I know the dark gods, witches, and Morgan blind Andrew. I pray that the Moon Goddess will open his eyes and let him realize he is living a dream and that his pack needs him more than Miriam. I pray that he can see and feel that we are true mates and will open his heart to my wolf and me. My wolf is growing impatient, and so am I. If Andrew still does not want to listen, I will challenge him for the Alpha position, and if he kills me, so be it.

It takes me a few days before I spot Miriam sitting in the garden reading, and I walk up to her and clear my throat. Miriam looks up from her book and frowns. I do not know if she is trying to place me or if she remembers me and remembers when we were children, and she knows I am from Andrew’s pack. I look at her, and she smiles. I remember when she and her mom stayed near our pack, and Andrew’s mother and father protected them against Morgan and hid them from him. Miriam even went to school with me, but that was before she and her mother disappeared, and I never saw her again until one day, we were in a town, and Andrew and I saw Miriam with her mother. He whispered mate, and I was surprised he and Miriam were mates. I kept away and let Andrew go and talk to her. He looked pale when I returned and told me he had rejected Miriam as he did not want a hybrid mate. She accepted his rejection. A few weeks later, Andrew regretted his actions and went looking for Miriam, but she and her mother were nowhere to be found. He started looking for her. I always wondered how she knew about it, until one day when one of my friends told me they had seen Miriam and that Andrew was looking for her. He wanted her back, and she had to contact him. Miriam told her she was not interested in Andrew as a mate and disappeared before Andrew could get close to her.

“Gretha? Wow, I have not seen you in ages. What are you doing here?” Miriam asks. I can see the suspicion in her eyes.

“Hello, Miriam. It is nice to see you again. Andrew sent me to come and spy on the Kingdom. He is with your father, and the two stupid wolves want to attack the Kingdom. I told Andrew he was making a mistake, but he did not want to listen to me. I am here to beg for my pack. Please talk to Andrew, and I will get him to come to the river that borders the Kingdom. I will make sure he is alone. You can bring as many wolves and magical creatures as you like if you think I will lead you into a trap,” Gretha says.

“Hmm, I can not trust anyone at this stage, as we know about the pending attack. I will go with you, but I am talking about the wolves, gypsies, and shamans with me. It is not that I do not trust you, but I know there are other spies here, and they might have seen us together. I do not trust the dark witches that are with the wolves. They are nasty and foul creatures. Why are Andrew and his pack praying to the dark gods? His mother and father will be pissed off if they know this. I can not understand what has happened to Andrew. We are not mates anymore, but he keeps on chasing after me. You are his mate, ain’t you?” Miriam asks.

“I am, and I am very worried about him. He is obsessed with you, and it is driving me nuts. Please do not think I hold anything against you, Miriam. I do not. I know it is not your fault that Andrew is acting so obsessively. I will always be your friend, and I know how hard you and your mother had it,” I say.

“I will help you and see if there is no magical influence on Andrew. Maybe that is why he is acting so strangely,” Miriam says.

“Thank you, I will arrange with Andrew to go to the river, but as you say, we must be careful. We do not know what the spies saw, and they may tell Andrew that I talked to you, so he might come with his army to capture you. What if your mate comes with you, and they start to fight? One of our mates can get hurt, and that is the last thing I want,” I say.

“We can not let that happen. I will talk to Jonathan, my mate,” Miriam says.

“Will he listen to you when he hears your old mate is here and wants you back? You know werewolves are jealous of their mates,” I say. I am not so sure that I want the two wolves to meet each other, as I know Andrew will be more determined to get Miriam back if he sees her with another mate.

“You are worried that Andrew will not give up on me after he sees me with my fated mate,” Miriam says. It is not a question, only a statement.

“You know how stubborn Andrew can be,” I say.

“I know, but I do not care. I am not his mate, and he needs to accept that,” Miriam says. She does not look happy.

“I will get him to meet us at the river tomorrow night, and maybe we will be lucky, and Andrew will not cause trouble for any of us. I want to save my pack. They are the most important. If Andrew does not want to listen, I will challenge him for the Alpha position, and if he kills me, so be it. My life is not worth living without him as my mate,” I say.

“I will be there but not allow Andrew to kill you. If he tries, I will help you,” Mirriam says.

“Please don’t. I will fight him, and the fight must be fair. It is a challenge to become the Alpha, and I have my pride. I will not accept any help,” I say.

“Well, it is fair. You have always been a proud wolf, and I admire you for that. I will not help you, but I will not let him kill you. You will always have a place in this Kingdom,” Miriam says.

“Thank you, but I do not want to live without him. My first mate died a week after I met him. He got in a fight with a rogue who was too strong for him,” I say. I never talk about Donald. He was my first love, and I still miss him. I would have gone rogue if Andrew had not made me his Beta and given me a reason to live. I am thankful for that, but then the Moon Goddess gave me Andrew for my mate, who is not even interested in me. He was already obsessed with Miriam, and I knew he would not even look at me. I look at Miriam. She is beautiful, and I feel like a fly against a butterfly.

“Honey, you are beautiful, and you must not feel like anyone is better looking than you,” Miriam says. I keep forgetting she is a witch and can read my mind if she wants to.

“I know, but you are so beautiful, and I am a plain Jane. I need to go. I will speak to you later. Meet me tomorrow at eight at the river,” I say. Miriam smiles and nods.

“Remember, you are not a plain Jane. You are beautiful,” Miriam says. I smile, as I know she is trying to be friendly. I have no illusions about my looks. I am a warrior, not a beauty queen. I walk away from Miriam and run to my hideout. As I reach the shelter of the spies, Edward, one of our spies, looks at me suspiciously.

“Why have you been talking to Miriam?” Edward asks.

“To save your sorry a*s, Eddie,” I say.

“What do you mean?” Edward asks.

“Do you think the wolves of the Kingdom do not know about our plans? Mirriam confirmed that they know, and when we attack, do you think we stand a chance against the well-trained wolves freshly out of multiple wars? I know what I am doing. I am trying to save my pack. Unlike your Alpha, I do care about you and the rest of the pack,” I say.

“You should be our Alpha. You are much more involved with the wolves than Andrew. He lost his mind after Miriam accepeds his rejection. I do not know what he wanted. Maybe he wanted Miriam to beg him not to reject him. We all know you are our true Luna, and I can see to what lengths you will go to protect us, Beta,” Eddie says.

“Eddie, do not talk about the Alpha in that manner. I will not allow it. I want you to promise me that you will not forsake us,” I say.

“I promise, but only because of you, Beta,” Eddie says.

“Well, I will try my best. I want Andrew to come to the river tomorrow night. Miriam will be there, but with protection, so we can not even think of kidnapping her. I know her King and Queen will be there, and you have seen them in action when they train. They are the strongest wolves I know. We must be careful and ensure Morgan does not find out about our meeting. Where are his spies?” I ask.

“They are all watching the wolves train. The King and Queen are there, and all they do is watch the King and Queen all day. You know how stupid Morgan is. He does not care about the wolves. He only wants to know about the King and Queen. At night they try to get women in their beds. Typical of that awful pack, they do not respect their mates,” Eddie says.

“Where are our other spies?” I ask.

“I sent them on another mission when I saw you going to talk to Miriam. I did not want them to see it. You know you were always like a sister to me, so I wanted to know why you were talking to Miriam, as I know you will never do anything to harm our pack. I admire you for your courage to stand up for your pack,” Eddie says.

“Thank you, Eddie. You do not know what this means to me,” I say.

“There are many that feel that way,” Eddie says. I smile, then I mind-link Andrew.

“Be at the river tomorrow night at eight tomorrow night. Be at the little town at the border. I will meet you there, Alpha,” I say.

“I will be there, but if you waste my time you will regret it,” Andrew says.

“If you think I am wasting your time by trying to save your a*s then I will challenge you for the Alpha position,” I answer.

“You are cocky, Beta! Know your place!” Andrew shouts. I break our link as I do not want to fight with him now. I know Andrew i snagry with me for telling him off the other night when I was home.
