The girls actually turned out not to be so bad after all.

Yes, at first, they had been a little awkward towards her, but hey, that was to be a little expected seeing as they were meeting each other for the first time and all.

To be honest, Lacy’d be lying if she didn’t say that even she had been a little weird at first as well.

But they weren’t as ‘unhandleable’ as she had thought they would be.

As a matter of fact, they actually reminded Lacy of the young, naïve little girl she used to be in her high school ages. The one who thought the world stopped and revolved around her simply because her parents were wealthy people. The one who thought that she could do whatever she wanted, and not be held accountable for it. She was grateful that she had grown past all of that.

But back to her and the girls, they had started to have a wonderful evening once the silver and alcohol had started to enter their bloodstreams. Of course, Lacy being human had only stuck to the normal booze as she knew it, but they’d had none of the fancy things she was used to back in the human world, so Kenya, who surprisingly knew a fair thing about booze and mixing them had whipped her what she had called a signature Kenyan special, made only from vodka and some Sprite. It had tasted quite bland at first if Lacy was being honest, but by the third drink, it tasted like paradise, and Lacy was already super flushed.

Yeah, your girl was a hopeless lightweight in the drinking department.

Save for a series of little mishaps that night, i.e Lola and Viv almost shifting into their Lyken forms over some guy,—Lacy didn’t quite catch his name—Anaya almost blurting out her feelings about the good doctor to her completely oblivious friends, and Lacy herself almost telling the Princess about the s*x Contract she had signed with her brother, the night had been quite uneventful.

Morning came way too fast for the human girl… the six girls, princess included a bit too chirpy and chatty for her to handle apparently.

It seemed that she was the only one experiencing hangover symptoms, and in that instant, Lacy cursed their enviable ability to heal fast, vowing to herself that she was never going to drink to this level ever again.

Reed sat in his study room, his gaze at first sight seemingly stuck on the sturdy oak doors ahead of him, but at a closer look revealing that he was only lost in thought.

What was he so fixated on?

Well, his conversation with Rieka after they had left the human girl all alone in the kitchen that eventful Thursday night.

“Well, that was awkward?” Rieka had said with a puzzled smile on her face as she had trailed after him into his room… where she was to spend the night. He had not said a word, going about as though she hadn’t just spoken, but her next words had had him stopping in his tracks. “Are you f*****g her?”

The question hadn’t exactly taken him by surprise, and neither had her straight to the pointedness. In fact, if the Alpha King was being honest, it was one of the few things he really admired about her.

To think that once upon a time he had been deeply in love with her.

And then he was gone for just a while, only to return to feel… nothing.

It made Reed wonder if that concept of love was real anyway… if it just wasn’t a programme one activated in their brain to avoid the troubles of being alone and without companionship. Because if it really came down to it, humans really were social animals, their Lyken halves even more so. And so, it made sense that the programme of finding love would be there to ensure the continuity of the human and the Lyken race. In fact, day in day out, Reed became more convinced that his theory was right.

But thankfully Rieka Howard was a woman who could think logically.

She recognized the strengths his matrimony to her would bring to the entire Clan… how it would elevate her family’s status both in name and in rank.

She also understood that he was no longer the young boy who had been desperately smitten with her… understood that theirs was just a beneficial interdependence—a symbiotic relationship if you will.

How he had gotten so lucky, the Alpha King had no idea.

But now, he was almost at the verge of f*****g it all up, and over some puny human girl too.

Of course, he had responded candidly to her question when she had asked if he was f*****g Lacy. He had told her that there was nothing between them, and it was the truth…ish.

He was done with the human girl.

And this time he really meant it.

There wasn’t going to be anymore stolen k****s… there was no more going to be any groping and fondling in private chambers and grand kitchens.

This time resolve was much more in place, this time… self-preservation was much more important than tying her to him in the hopes that he could get back his family heirlooms.

There was no way Reed was going to f**k up the steady practical arrangement he had with his Gamma General for whatever this was with the human that burned so hot, and so bright, and threatened to consume him in its fury and sizzling heat.

She wanted it all to end, right?

The human wanted to be able to come and go as she pleased without sensing him, right? Wanted to no longer have any connection to him that had been put in place by some Moon Goddess, right?

Well now he wanted that too.

He also wanted to be rid of these weird emotions that kept him awake all night.

He wanted to be rid of his insane attraction to her, wanted his thoughts and his c**k to be free of the magic hold she seemed to have placed on them.

He didn’t want to catch himself sniffing the air to see if he could catch a whiff of her hair shampoo anymore—which was a sweet smell of apples in case you were wondering. Neither did he want to see or make her laugh anymore. Basically, he wanted out.

She had said that she was sure a Rejection Process would rid her off the way she was feeling, right?

Reed Alderon Winchester was sure that the same principle would apply to him too.

And so, with all of that deliberation completed in his head, the Alpha King took a deep breath and stood up, heading for the door, his jaw set in stubbornness and determination.

He was going to do it.

He was finally going to reject Lacy Reynolds.

He was finally going to reject his supposed fated mate.
