Reed had gone to his sister’s room, but the girls were nowhere to be seen, and the door was locked.

At first, he thought that they’d certainly be in the garden, given how Lacy absolutely adored the place, and so he had gone there too, only to be met with the same discovery.

They weren’t there either.

He had quickly reached out to Lobo through the mind link, and the Beta General had promised to get back to him in a few minutes, but he had still not heard anything and so he had just returned to his study.

The human has gone shopping with the Princess and her friends, Your Eminence.

The dreaded words filled the Alpha King’s head through the mind link, courtesy of one of the field warriors almost as soon as he had closed the door to his study behind him and taken a seat.

Shopping.

With Anaya and her friends.

Now, the Alpha King trusted his sister… really, he did—hell it was the reason why he had taken Lacy to her that first time—but it was her friends who were the questionable characters he did not want the human mingling with.

Reed disliked them with a passion—shameless she-Lykens who constantly threw themselves at him whenever they got the chance, and whenever he got the chance to see them interact with his sister—which was once in a blue moon in case you were wondering—he got this vibe that Anaya didn’t particularly like them herself.

So why she still hung out with them he had no idea.

They wouldn’t keep that long though, right?

It was just shopping after all, how long could that possibly take? In about an hour or two… three, maximum, they would be back so he could see the girl and complete this rejection process once and for all and get it over and done with so he could move on.

And so, with that settled, Reed Alderon Winchester threw himself into his work, his mind focused for what seemed like a few hours.

But one hour turned into three,

Three into five,

Five into ten.

And then the Alpha King realised that he was not concentrating anymore, his mind stuck on them once again.

What the hell was keeping them?

How long was shopping supposed to take?

An entire day?

It was somewhere around 10 p.m. now, and though Reed didn’t want to admit it, worry was etched onto his handsome, granite-like face, so many what ifs already on his mind.

He tried mind-linking Bruno, his trusted guard, not wanting to reach his sister and come off as needy all of a sudden, but he seemed out of range.

What the f**k was going on?

He tried reaching his sister, even tried reaching all of those annoying girls she walked with, but he got nothing.

Reed stood up in a frenzy, alarmed, but his heart slammed back into his chest in relief when it hit him.

THE CLUB!

That was it.

They were gone clubbing.

The Elixir was the only club in the city that was so close to the Clan’s borders, and its location sometimes made inter clan communications through mind link difficult. You’d best believe that the Alpha King was starting to regret the decision of approving its construction now.

But of all the clubs in the city, why would Anaya choose that particular club of all places?

Reed eyed his phone lying there on his study table and briefly wondered if he should call them to confirm it. Lykens hated having to use their phones, and who could blame them really? Their mind-links did the job of communication better, and it didn’t have to be constantly charged or serviced.

But back to the matter at hand, was it really necessary to ruin their fun by bothering them with calls? The probability that anyone would answer was even low given that they were in a club and all.

If it was just the rejection process he needed to discuss with the human, he could very well wait till they returned, right?

Gods know that he had already been doing that for ten hours, what the hell were a few more?

“You see? Weak. Pathetic.” Ace’s deep voice came out of nowhere, almost startling Reed as he proudly shook out his dark fur in his subconscious, looking every bit like the Lyken Alpha that he was. “That’s what the human’s presence has turned you into.” The Alpha king heard the low growl of disgust at the end of the sentence, but he tried to ignore it, tried to come off as nonchalant. “You’ve totally ignored me for gods know how long now, Ace, except for when I desperately need you.” Reed growled back, “Tell you what? Can you go back to doing just that? It’s been much peaceful here without your cloying, annoying presence.” Reed clapped back in irritation.

Now was so not the time for this?

He f*****g needed to think!

“I can’t.” Came the beast’s proud reply, “You see, this is one of the instances where you desperately need me, Reed.”

“I don’t need you.”

“You do if you’re going to the club.” Reed could have sworn that he caught a smirk on the giant wolf’s f*****g face. It made him even more upset. “I am not going anywhere, Ace. f*****g drop it already.” The Alpha king was almost indignant in his reply.

“Yeah, right.” For a beast, that sarcastic tone was spot on.

All was silent for a while, and then Reed broke the silence, his tone very much subdued, “And in the case where I do decide to go there after all, I could just use one of the cars.” He pointed out in satisfaction. “See? I totally do not need your help like you think.”

At this point, Reed did not know why his Lyken could so easily reduce him to such a childish state, but he didn’t even want to think about it.

“You hate being in cars.”

“I’d choose that any day than to actually give you control.”

“I can forcibly take control if I wish. Don’t make me, Reed.”

The Alpha King quickly put the mind blocks in place, not wanting to deal with his other half when he was in such a vulnerable state. Grabbing his jacket which had all along been behind his swivel chair, he headed for the door as he reached into the jacket, popping a pill into his mouth.

In that moment, though he had been blocked, it seemed that Ace still knew exactly what his human side wanted, for the beast quickly took over, shifting into its huge impressive form, and then breaking into a full-on run.

It looked like they were going to the club after all.
