Rejected, Then Reborn -
Chapter 75
“My name is Kernon Rovell.” The strange witness stated.
“Tell us what kind of relationship you have with the Alpha of the Blue Valley Pack, Kernon,” The first Leader drawled in interest, seemingly invested in the controversial case that had made its way to his table.
“I have no relationship with him, my Lord,” The red headed man with a beard so long it almost touched his groin admitted, “I’m just the one who uncovered that the woman who had been posing as his current mate, Alexia had been a fluke all along. She’s fae, just like me, but she’s a shapeshifter. My guess is, that is why she had managed to infiltrate werewolf territory for so long.”
“Where is this shapeshifter you speak of, then?”
“We have no idea, my Lord, she seems to have disappeared once more… but her real name is Refia Mins. You can ask anyone in the Fae realm, they will tell you some of the atrocities she had committed before she suddenly went missing.”
Either the man was telling the truth, or he was a damn fine actor, for Lacy, and Reed could not really tell…
Hell, it had Lacy doubting s**t already.
She had really thought there could be a chance that she’d win.
“So, what are you hinting at?” Resno Granmeyer pressed a little impatiently, wanting to get this over and done with.
“I am just saying that I am in no way refuting anything, Mrs. Smith—”
“That will be Miss Reynolds,” Lacy cut him off angrily,
“—Apologies, Miss Reynolds,” He quickly amended, “I am not disputing anything you’ve been through, Ma’am… but I really do not think that your husband was in the right frame of mind when any of that happened.”
“Thank you, Kernon… you may take your seat.” The Vampire King flicked a hand absentmindedly. “Lucius Smith, Alpha of the Blue Valley Pack,” He called out, raising his head to stare at the werewolf with the long silver blonde hair, “You may take the stand now.”
Lacy felt her heart tighten in anger, and annoyance, and fear, a myriad of emotions all tornado-ing into something she was afraid she soon wouldn’t be able to control as her former chosen mate climbed up the stairs to the stand, dressed in a formal light blue suit.
At first glance, he had the face of an innocent angel, one that could pass off as handsome even.
Oh, but Lacy knew better.
That he was a wicked, vile man who discarded people when he finished using them for their intended purposes.
She was the only woman in the room.
And her case was being tried by fifty men who did not look like they understood the plight of girls who had been in her situation.
Hell… for them, subjecting women to that kind of abuse was probably normal, with the only part of her tale that had caught their interest being the fact that two leaders of different realms were suddenly fighting for her.
They didn’t have her interest at heart?
This was a f*****g lost cause, something Reed had been trying to warn her of all along, but she had refused to accept it.
Well, she saw it all now.
“Lacy, forgive me. I am so, so sorry.”
Those were the first words he uttered when he climbed the stand.
Such a darned actor.
That was who the bastard was.
He even had f*****g tears in his eyes.
Wow,
Just wow.
“You know,” He sniffed, “When I was approached by Klaus, the memory Fae who had told me all about you, I had been sick to my stomach, shaking with rage at all the vile things I did to you, but that was not me, Lacy… you know I would never hurt you,”
“Except that you did, Lucius. Again, and again.”
It was her first direct sentence to him ever since she had fled Blue Valley, and it felt liberating to tell it all to his face like that, to make him know that the dust that once upon a time he had thrown in her eyes had all washed off, leaving her clear eyed and lucid.
“If you have any regrets like you claim you do, you would do the noble thing and let me go, let me have the happy ever after you promised but couldn’t fulfill with the second chance mate the Moon Goddess so graciously gifted me.”
“You see, that’s exactly the thing, Lacy… he’s just as vile as I am, perhaps even more,” The werewolf pointed at the lyken, “Did he tell you that Blue Valley has his family heirlooms, and that he tried to offer you to me in exchange for them?”
Lacy shot Reed a confused look, her heart hammering so hard in her chest that she was sure he could hear it too, “Is it true?”
Reed swallowed hard, but right before he could open his mouth, the bastard beat him to it, “I have the letter right here, Lacy,” He said quickly, whipping the paper in question out of his pocket, silently asking the First Leader and the Supreme Enforcer of the council if he could take it to her.
The Vampire King relented, and Lucius climbed down the stand to place the sheet of paper in her shaking hands.
She spent a few minutes perusing it, and then she raised her head haughtily, glaring at him, “This doesn’t mean anything, Lucius… at least he didn’t kill me over and over like you did.”
“And why do you think that is, Lacy? Doesn’t it strike you as odd that someone who was willing to give you away suddenly has a change of mind, and then you soon get powers? f*****g think!”
“Enough, Lucius!” Reed growled, standing up, his eyes a blazing red, “Lacy, you know me, and you know that I kept this from you because—”
“No need to talk, Reed.” She cut him off, “I may not be happy with you right now, but nothing this despicable man can say is going to turn me against you, I still choose you, and I know you meant no harm keeping this away from me.”
Lucius scoffed bitterly, finally dropping the repentant façade, the hatred and evil in his eyes finally coming back to light. “I should have known that you’d still be stupid… trusting. Unfortunately, I have bad news for you, love. We’re still married in the eyes of the law. You, my dear, are still my wife and my mate.”
“You rejected me, remember?” Lacy raised her chin at him.
“It still doesn’t cancel out the fact that we never annulled our marriage. You’re still, and will forever remain my b***h, love… because I, am never ever letting you go,” He smirked contentedly.
In that moment, Reed, who had apparently had enough, just lost it, delivering a powerful blow that sent Lucius tumbling to the ground, but that was not enough for the ruthless Alpha King?
No.
At that point, annihilation was the only thing that was on his mind, and he was determined to see it through, to say good riddance to the bastard that had been nothing but a f*****g plague to him and almost every one he loved.
Ace seemed to be in total agreement too.
And so, he followed him down to the ground, continuing to deliver punch after punch, too far gone to even care that he was probably freaking his fated mate out, but he actually wasn’t.
If anything at all, Lacy had never loved him more, it sure felt reassuring that in a room filled with men who could care less about her, she could trust in her man to have her back.
Unfortunately, Reed’s vision to end the despicable bastard was cut off by a bunch of the council leaders who broke their fight, pulling him away from the badly hurt and yet still cocky Alpha werewolf.
“Enough, Winchester!” Resno Granmeyer voiced out his complete displeasure, his fangs out as he hissed in annoyance.
“You have been disregarding the power and the authority of the Supernatural Council for far too long, looking down on my influence as the First leader and Supreme Enforcer of this prestigious council for a very long time, and I have let you get away with hell in honor of the respect I had for your parents, but really, I have had enough. Your complete and blatant disrespect for all the leaders gathered here today is not going to go unpunished, son. You will spend a week in the Council’s dungeons, but not before you hear my verdict regarding the case you and Lucius Smith have brought before me.”
He sighed deeply, nodding to one of the leaders whose role for the day seemed to be to announce the next order of service. “And now, His Excellency, King Resno Granmeyer, First Leader and Supreme Enforcer of the Supernatural Council will converge with the grand jury for a deliberation. The verdict will soon be announced.”
The deliberation seemed to take forever, held in a private room, while Lucius, a bunch of werewolves Lacy recognized from his pack, herself, Reed, and a bunch of guards who had been stationed to make sure that none of the beasts pounced on each other again all waited out in the Grand Hall of the council headquarters.
Both Lacy and Reed were lost in thought, holding on to each other’s hands as they silently contemplated how this would go… whether it would go in their favour, or whether Lucius would emerge victorious.
You want to know the funny thing?
Reed could not say he knew who would win.
For Resno Granmeyer sure could be unpredictable sometimes, and if he was being honest, that was what Reed was counting on for Lacy to win this trial.
He could sense that she was angry with him, but he liked that she was still holding on to him.
He knew that she was going to come for his head later on, and he was actually counting on that so he could reassure her that his heart was and forever would be with her.
Resno Granmeyer and the Grand Jury finally emerged, snapping the Alpha King from his thoughts. There was a loud sound of shuffling as they all settled down, and when order was finally restored, the First Leader and Supreme Enforcer of the Supernatural Council went straight to the point, “This is my verdict: The Human, Lacy Reynolds, is still bound by the legal sanctity of marriage to the Alpha Werewolf of the Blue Valley Pack, Lucius Smith, she is therefore to return to his pack as his wife with immediate effect.”
“NO!” Reed hollered the words, standing up in infuriation.
“You will be quiet while I give this verdict, Winchester, or else I’ll have you thrown out.” Resno Granmeyer warned with another hiss.
“If Lacy Reynolds is not okay with this verdict,” He continued, “She is to return a month later to seek an appeal, or a divorce after she has gone through counselling with her husband and they have still not been able to resolve their issues.” He slammed his gavel down hard and stood up, signaling an end of the trial.
And that was when Lacy lost it.
