Shadows Of A Forgotten Spring
Billionaire Shadow 142

Chapter 142

Mrs. Walker walked into the living room, her eyes wanning the pace for an explanation of tome sort. Something was off the knew it right in the pit of her stomach. Everything in the house had felt off since the previous eventing. Brandon and her personal nurse, Kelly, were

acting strange and secretive. Their whispers and quick glances at each other only heightened her

Adding to her worry, her phone had been out of service since yesterday, and no matter how many times she tried to get a signal, it wouldn't connect. It felt deliberate, as though someone didn't want her to reach out. Even when she'd tried turning on the television late at night for some distraction, Brandon had insisted on switching it off, his explanation not se convincing but she has given in.

Mrx. Walker's mind started racing. She knew Brandon far too well he and Diana had virtually grown up together. He was a lousy liar, and now his behavior virtually screamed that he was bling something.

She sat in the sitting room, fidgeting her hands at the edge of her sweater, darting her eyes from Kelly to Brandon. They sat on the carpet, playing with Emily and Ethan, laughing at too small a thing, trying to fill the space with forced normalcy. But their smiles didn't quite reach their eyes, and the tension of their shoulders gave them away.

Her chest constricted, and fear clawed its way up her throat. She hadn't heard from Emma in over 24 hours. That wasn't like her daughter, not in the least. Emma always found a way to check in, no matter how busy she was.

She swallowed hard and shook her head, trying to dismiss the dark imagination playing out in her mind. But still, the silence was deafening.

Alexander stepped into the cold, sterile operating room filled with the soft hum of medical machinery. The faint scent of antiseptic remained in the air as he adjusted the hospital gown on his tall frame. His heart was pounding inside his chest because with fear and hope. Just beyond the wall separating the operating rooms was Emma, who lay fighting for her life.

He glanced around, meeting the eyes of the surgeons, each one handpicked as the best in their field. Their expressions were calm and focused.

The expressions were calm and focused.

He sighed deeply and heaved himself upon the operating bed. The sterile sheets felt unnervingly cold against his skin but he didn't mind.

"Ready, sir?" one of the surgeons asked, his voice filled with fear

Alexander nodded, his throat too tight to speak. His thoughts raced to Emma. Would she hang on long enough for the transplant to save her? Could he endure it if she didn't make it out alive? He clenched his fists, pushing away the doubts.

As the anesthesiologist approached-with syringe in hand, containing a sedative, Alexander took another heavily breath. He tried to focus on the reason he was here, the reason he had made this decision without hesitation.

Emma.

The needle went into his arm, the prick not really registering there. A drowsy warm wave began to work its way through his body and his vision began to blur.

"Count backward from ten, sir," the anesthesiologist instructed.

Alexander ignored him, looking up at the light on the ceiling.

Faces around him faded into shadows. But before unconsciousness could claim him, one final face flickered in his mind, Emma's face, her smile from a memory long ago. When it had just been them, without Annie. The meinory was long

forgotten but somehow has found its way back to Alexander.

Annie paced the hall, her heels softly clicking against the polished floor and echoing her growing frustration. The air was thick with tension: big shots and hospital staff all stood around with worries.

Unlike Emma's operating room, where the glass were transparent. Alexander's operating room glass was darkened. The darkened glass concealed everything, leaving everybody outside with worries.

Annie stood with her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her fingers digging into her skin. Her jaw was clenched, her eyes cold and furious. That Annie was livid was no secret to anyone in the hallway; the air around her seemed to vibrate with her barely contained rage. Every time her gaze drifted toward Emma's room, her stomach twisted with a strong jealousy and loathing; she cursed under her breath.

Her mind was racing, playing over and over, trying to put together how everything had unraveled so fast. How had Alexander found out about the twins? She knew right then and there that Emma had betrayed her, going against their agreement to keep the secret buried. Annie hissed, nails digging deep in her palm.

Emma had always being the green snake in the green grass and she shouldn't have overlooked that.

Annie's bitterness only deepened as she thought of Emma's connection to Mrs. Walker

If her marriage to Alexander had worked out four years ago, Annie would have relished in Alexander's demise. She would have hoped he didn't make it out of that operating room, thrilled to claim his fortune and leave with her freedom. But it wasn't like that. Their wedding day was ruined, her place in his life tenuous at best. She was disposable, and that scared her more than anything.

Her anger boiled over, her thoughts turning dark.

She stared at an unconscious Emma lying in the bed, cursing the day she met her.

She feels that Emma has bitten off more than she

can

chew, and she will make sure she pays for what she has done.

Time lagged, and every minute dragged like an eternity. The sterile walls of the hospital closed in on her. Finally, after what seemed like the six longest hours of her life, the doors to Alexander's operating room slid open. The hinges snapped her out of her thoughts as Annie's head whipped around. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw Alexander being wheeled out on a hospital bed.

"Alexander!" she exclaimed, running to him. Tears welled in her eyes.

She reached the bed, her hands clasping the cold metal frame as she struggled to keep pace with the nurses pushing it. Her voice cracked with emotion. "How is he? Is he okay? Please tell me he's okay!"

The nurse at the front looked at her, his face impassive. "He's stable, but he needs to rest. The surgery was successful, but

he'll need time to recover."

Annie nodded, her hands shaking as they held on to the bed. She looked down at Alexander's pale face, his strong feature now softened by exhaustion. He looked too angelic to be a human, but his looks were the least reason why Annie was with him. All she wanted was his money and power.

Annie's grip on the bed frame tightened as she hardened her resolve. She leaned in closer, and though her voice was low, it
