Chapter 57

Chester POV

Feeling guilty for leaving Niyole at the time he needed me the most, I began packing a little bit faster.

If not for Juliana, my foster cousin, I wouldn’t have gotten a wind of what was happening at the palace this morning.

Although, I was glad that I was finally going to see that face that I had avoided for almost six months, now yet it wasn’t how I planned our reunion.

Scarlett.

I had been secretly going to see her since she left the pack. No one knew.. maybe Niyole knew, but he had never confronted me.

There was a reason I had avoided her. Whenever I saw her, there is always that feeling that creeped to my heart.

As I was packing up, I raised my head up to see my foster uncle and his family. I wonder why they had to trouble themselves to come to the hotel.

After Alpha Niyole left yesterday, I decided to go and visit my foster uncle who lived in the same city. I was there this morning when I heard what happened back at home.

Actually it was my uncle’s daughter, Juliana who told me the news. I guess Niyol was too flustered. I called him afterwards promising to get to the pack as soon as possible.

That was why I cancelled all the upcoming meetings I was supposed to attend on his behalf. I decided to cut my journey short and return to the pack as soon as I could.

“Chester, are you going back without me? Was it because I…” my cousin said, pouting.

I really didn’t know how I was going to tell her that Niyol already has another mate. She had a crush on Niyol. Beside that, she had always dreamed of working in the department of private investigators that are directly under Niyol’s order.

“What do you mean by I am leaving without taking you along? Aren’t you the one who told me about the situation back at the capital?” I asked, trying to get my acts together, but it really wasn’t easy.

“You weren’t running away? Then take me with you. I am sure you will find me useful. You know I am very good at tracking down anything.” She said, dragging me.

“I can’t. I haven’t discussed with Niyol, besides your father would not want you to leave for somewhere that far and… once I get back to the pack, I will be occupied with those trainees…” as I was trying to make up an excuse, I received a mindlink from her.

After I listened to her, I looked up to see her grinning. I really wanted to rip that smile off her face.

“Uncle, will you permit me to go back to the Capital with Juliana? You know I need to go there as soon as possible and since she is insisting…” I said, giving her a side glare.

This girl was just too spoiled. I knew that she was just trying to run away from her family. She would grow tired in a week or two.

“You…” My uncle wanted to scold me. He knew I was just bending to Juliana’s trick.

“Let them go, honey. I can’t attend to Juliana now. You know we didn’t finish what we started yesterday, right?” My aunt said, winking at my uncle.

It seemed my aunt had another thing up her sleeve. What had Juliana told her?

That did the trick because he immediately changed his tone. He cleared his throat as he ordered me, “Let Juliana go with you. Your aunt and I will be quite busy for sometime.”

This old man! Why was he easily tricked by my aunt? If this is what happens between mates, then I will gladly reject it!

I didn’t want to be a toy in the hands of one woman.

“What are you guys still waiting for? Get out now.” My uncle urged me.

I had no choice but to lead Juliana to the car and believe me, that girl had her box of clothes beside my car already!

“I am surprised at how you packed these clothes? Why are you bringing so many clothes?”

“Are you daft or something? Can’t you see my father’s way of chasing us out? I bet he wouldn’t even summon me in the next few months!” She said, her expression was off.

But why do I feel like she was happy?

“Are you happy that you are staying away from them? Don’t you dare think of trying what you did the other time! I won’t let you get away with it again!” I warned her sternly.

“And do you think I would allow you to touch me too? The last time was a mistake because we were drunk. Luckily we didn’t do anything rash. I am staying sober all through today.” She replied.

Yeah. That was what happened and that was what she was blackmailing me with. We both got drunk the day she came to visit me and we almost… got down.

I had been avoiding her since then, feeling guilty towards Scarlett. The next morning when I wanted to apologise, Juliana just brushed it off saying she thought I was Niyol.

I knew she indeed had a crush on him, but I felt bitter that day hearing her say that.

“You had better stay sober because I won’t hesitate to throw you out! I have already had enough these days.” I said, looking at her sternly.

Although that was what I thought I wanted, why then was I getting frustrated that she was refusing to touch me? I felt heartbroken, sort of.

The feeling wasn’t right. I was supposed to feel this way only towards Scarlett. Not any other woman.

It will go away soon, I told myself. I helped her put her luggage in the car as we zoomed off.

We got to the capital very late, even though I drove at top speed. I wanted to get to the palace immediately, but I just couldn’t let Juliana feel stressed after the journey.

I decided to drive her to my apartment so she could rest and sleep. Due to the long drive, I was feeling tired. I decided to take a rest, but I slept off on the couch till the next morning.

I opened my eyes and noticed it was already morning. I rushed to the bathroom to freshen up so I could go to the palace.

Immediately I got out of my room after getting dressed, Juliana also came out all dressed.

“Where are you going?” I asked her.

“To the palace, of course. I told you I want to help you… I mean Niyol in this case. Trust me, I am very good at my job.”

“Juliana…”

“Let’s just say I am on probation with this case, okay? If I can’t solve it, I will go back home.” She said, her eyes pleading.

I had no time to argue with her, so I let her be. Besides, it was hard to say no to such eyes.

When we got to the palace, the atmosphere was broody and I felt pained at my friend’s misery. I wonder which people were bold enough to pull this off.

“Juliana, were you able to work a little on the case?” I asked.

“That’s why I am here. I need to talk to the last people she came in contact with and also the places she went to.” Juliana replied.

“Alright. I will introduce you officially to Niyol. Let’s go inside.”

When we got to Niyol’s chamber, I saw a scene that shook me hard. I couldn’t believe it was true, but I was also not too surprised.

“Is she the one in your heart? Pfft! You have such horrible taste. This girl is obviously smitten with the alpha!” Juliana said, laughing.

“Do you think I don’t know?” I replied.

“You knew and you are still acting like that?” Juliana asked, obviously irritated.

When we got closer, Niyol raised his head up. Seeing me, he felt relieved and his face showed a little light. That instant, I felt his pain that he was desperately trying to stop.

Scarlett also looked up at me, she smiled and continued doing what she was doing to Niyole. She was using the cloth in her hands to wipe his head occasionally.

“What happened, Niyole?” I asked, looking concerned.

“It’s nothing. Maybe it was because of the stress. I was feeling hot and also had a splitting headache. Scarlett offered to help me till Laci comes back. She went to check on her child.” Niyole replied, standing up from the couch.

He stopped when he saw Juliana. Casting me a questioning look, he looked towards her direction.

“Sorry, Niyole. This is…”

“Your majesty, I am Miss Juliana Roberts. I’m an investigator at the Province and… I am Chester’s girlfriend. Pleased to meet you, your majesty.

What the f**k was this girl saying? I wanted to refute her words, but she warned me again with the incident of that night.

I glanced briefly at Scarlett, but it seemed she wasn’t bothered at all!

Niyole looked at Juliana closely,” Oh! Juliana Roberts. So you are the Juliana my workers were talking about? I had wanted to recruit you once the training began, but I never knew you were the one!”

Although I was surprised, now wasn’t the time to be, because we needed to act fast on Koko’s matter.

“She wishes to join the investigation team,” I told Niyol.

“Well, it would have been unethical, but because of the fact that she has a nice review. I think I will give her a chance.” Niyole said. Then added,” Make a breakthrough and I promise to give you direct promotion.”

“I will try my best, your majesty,” she said, bowing deeply.

I smiled faintly at her enthusiasm. We need it to find Koko as soon as possible.
