What Separates Me and You -
Chapter 440 Pretend Like Nothing Happened
A few minutes later, the car sped onto an elevated highway. Avery followed suit and kept pace with the kidnappers' vehicle. "Josephine!"
Upon hearing the voice, Josephine quickly sat up. She desperately clung to the window. She spotted Quintin outside. "Quintin!" Josephine pounded on the car window. Tears were streaming down her face. "Let me go! I want to get out!" She frantically searched for a way to open the door, but it was securely locked. No matter how she tried, she couldn't open it. Quintin shouted from outside, "Stop the car!"
"You guys must be out of your mind to kidnap Josephine! Do you have a death wish?"
The driver ignored her and stepped on the accelerator, speeding away.
"What do we do? So many cars are after us."
"Damn it, just keep driving! What's done is done. Even if we stop, Lewis won't spare us!"
The kidnappers realized their kidnapping plan had gone horribly wrong. They hadn't even left the city yet and were already being chased.
They had no choice but to face the relentless pursuit. There was no turning back. They had to fight to the end!
Josephine continued to protest. She was beginning to annoy the people in the car. "Silence her."
They stuffed something into Josephine's mouth, and that effectively silenced her. Her hands were also bound. After a brief struggle, Josephine exhausted all her strength.
Meanwhile, Avery was still relentlessly pursuing the kidnappers. Quintin made for the door handle.
"Can't you hear us? Stop the car immediately!"
"If you don't stop the car ..."
Before Avery could finish her sentence, the passenger door suddenly opened. Avery's motorcycle collided with it violently. "Bang!"
A loud bang rang out, and Avery screamed.
Josephine widened her eyes and saw the motorcycle colliding with the car door. The car door broke in half.
She watched the motorcycle overturn and fly out. Quintin and Avery were thrown off by the impact. They fell from the elevated highway. Josephine's gaze followed them. She looked back and watched them plummet from the elevated highway.
She sat dazed in the car. Tears were streaming down her face. She couldn't utter a single word.
The car drove away, and the pursuing vehicles followed closely. The destroyed motorcycle lay abandoned on the ground. No one spared even a glance.
The vehicles raced recklessly on the road, causing chaos and accidents everywhere. Sounds of screeching brakes and blaring horns rang out. Josephine sat motionless in the car. Her mind was filled with images of Quintin and Avery being thrown off by the collision.
They exited the elevated highway and came onto a national highway lined with green trees. Not many cars were on this road, so they began driving even more recklessly.
The chasing cars continued pursuing the kidnappers for a distance.
"They're still coming after us. What should we do?"
"Keep driving. What else can we do?"
The person speaking took off their mask and angrily threw it away.
Josephine saw the man's face through the rearview mirror. He seemed to be in his twenties.
If Lewis were here, he could definitely recognize him.
He was none other than Michael, the man who caused trouble in the Alvarez Manor.
Michael felt resentful for not receiving a share of the inheritance. He had gone to the Alvarez Manor several times and each time only to be driven away.
Not only was he expelled by Nancy, but she secretly sent people to threaten and beat him.
His mother got hit on the head while trying to protect him. Now, she was in a coma.
That incident triggered him to seek revenge!
Someone told him that if he kidnapped Lewis' wife, he could get whatever he wanted, even if it was Lewis' life.
So, he had Josephine kidnapped and planned to negotiate with Lewis.
Michael noticed that the cars were catching up from the rearview mirror. However, they maintained a safe distance. He realized the person was right. Lewis wouldn't dare to act recklessly as long as Josephine was in his hands.
Michael became less anxious when he realized that they were hesitant to act.
"No need to drive so fast. Slow down."
The driver complied and reduced the speed. The cars behind also followed suit.
A sinister smile spread across Michael's face. It seemed his guess was correct.
The guards in the back noticed it too. The one in front spoke into the walkie-talkie, "Master Lewis, the car ahead is slowing down. Should we catch up?"
Lewis gripped the steering wheel tightly and fixed his eyes on the black car ahead. He remained silent briefly and said, "Catch up with them."
"Got it."
The guards stepped on the gas and quickly caught up.
In the blink of an eye, two cars surrounded the black Volkswagen. They overtook it and blocked it in the middle of the road.
The black Volkswagen was forced to stop abruptly. The driver slammed on the brakes, and the people inside the car nearly got thrown out by the inertia.
The cars shook violently, and Josephine's head collided with the seat. She felt dizzy.
"Damn it!" Michael kicked the car angrily and glanced at the cars blocking them.
He commanded, "Bring her down."
Josephine was still in a daze when the men dragged her out of the car.
Michael grabbed Josephine. He put one hand around her neck and pointed a gun at her head.
"Stay still, or I'll shoot you."
Josephine was suffocating. She gasped for breath as she looked ahead.
They were in a wooded area on the outskirts, with lush green trees on both sides and a wide asphalt road in the middle.
The sky was turning dark. Soon, the darkness enveloped everything around them. Josephine's vision was blurred.
Michael kept his eyes fixed on the cars blocking the road. Several bodyguards emerged.
Michael grew nervous. His grip on Josephine's neck tightened.
The bodyguards cleared a passage by moving to both sides.
Lewis was still dressed in his suit. He walked ahead. The car's headlights outlined his figure.
"Stop right there!" Michael shouted to stop Lewis as he approached. "Lewis, if you dare to come any closer, I'll kill her."
Lewis halted. Expressionlessly, he stared at the gun in Michael's hand.
"Who would have thought you'd have a gun?"
Michael hesitated for a while, then mustered up his courage. "That's none of your business! Lewis, I only have one question. Can the inheritance be redistributed?"
Lewis remained silent and stared at him.
As time ticked by, Michael grew impatient. "Say something!"
Lewis finally spoke, "Michael, even if I agree to redistribute the inheritance and give everything to you, do you really think you still have a chance to get it?"
Michael's face fell. His hand holding the gun trembled.
He knew exactly what he was doing.
He had no way out now.
Lewis continued, "If I were you, I would release her right now. Go back and extort money from the one who incited you. Make sure you disappear after that."
Michael was stunned. He seemed to relax a bit.
He stared at Lewis cautiously. "What do you mean?"
Lewis said, "I mean, I can pretend like nothing ever happened if you let her go."
Michael looked at Lewis skeptically as if trying to confirm the credibility of his words.
"You're really willing to let me go?"
